This coming Saturday we will see once beaten Japanese fighter Ryosuke "Eagle Eye" Iwasa (19-1, 12) battle against the talented and tricky Lee Haskins (31-3, 13) in a contest for the IBF “interim” Bantamweight title. The bout, set to be screened live on Channel 5 in the UK, will be Iwasa's first outside of Tokyo and will see both men fighting in their first "world" title bout.
Despite both stepping up to "world" title level here they have each claimed their national and continental titles among other achievements and both are widely regarded as being among the top 10 or so in the division.
Today saw several bookies opening the market on the fight. The early odds suggest that Iwasa is the slight under-dog being priced between 5/4 and 11/8 whilst Haskins has been priced around 4/6.
We suspect that if the fight was set to take place in Tokyo, and not Haskins's home town of Bristol, the odds would have flipped with Iwasa being the favourite. To us it's a clear case of home advantage playing a factor in the odds, however we really are struggling to split the two men who are fantastically well matched on paper in what appears to be a genuine 50-50 match up.
