Earlier this year we saw Japanese youngster Ryo Matsumoto (17-1, 15) [松本 亮] suffer a shock loss to Victor Uriel Lopez (10-5-1, 4). That loss saw Matsumoto lose his unbeaten record before under-going some medical treatment for a serious issue that later left him requiring surgery and prolonged medical attention.
This past week Matsumoto was given the green light to return to the ring and it was announced that his return would be on December 30th and would see him rematching Lopez, seeking to avenge his loss and return to the ring in a successful manner.
Although Matsumoto has been inactive since the loss in May there is suspicion that he will be better than ever on his return following surgery to treat Hypothyroidism, which was his eventual diagnosis and had been an issue that had effected him during his amateur career as well as in the bout with Lopez.
Although hotly tipped as a star of the future Matsumoto's up coming bout will be the most significant of his career, and a repeat loss to Lopez will likely see the 22 year old forced to ask serious questions about his future in the sport. A loss again however is seen a unlikely with Matsumoto almost certainly the clear betting favourite for the rematch.
