Earlier today Japanese fans saw world ranked Filipino Rey Loreto (22-13, 14) over come local hopeful Koji Itagaki (16-10-2, 7) [板垣 幸司], with a 4th round TKO.
The fight started somewhat promisingly for Itagaki who had his moments early on with a confident start, and in fact in round 2 Itagaki seemed to be out boxing an impatient looking Loreto. that promising start however came to a halt in round 3 when Loreto managed to break through the defenses of Itagaki, landing a nasty left to the body.
The body shot that Loreto landed in round 3 was a foreshadowing of what was to come in round 3, when a similar shot caused Itagaki to unravel and a follow up from the Filipino forced the referee to save the Japanese fighter, who looked like a man who was all in.
Following the bout Loreto seemed to suggest that he was now chasing world title bouts, and may well land a big fighter later this year. As for Itagaki it's believed he will bounce back and grow from the loss.
