This coming weekend we get the chance to see Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38) attempt to reclaim the WBO Welterweight title as he takes on reigning champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10). The bout will be Vargas' first defense a chance to see if Pacquiao really has what's needed to remain a top fighter.
Despite some suggesting Pacquiao is a fighter who is on the slide he is an amazingly hard to back favourite with the best price being 1/5, and some bookies having him at 1/10 which is essentially unbackable. Vargas, the defending champion, is priced as a very tempting 11/2 with some bookies, and although we have no problem with him being the under-dog we are shocked by how wide those odds are, especially given his performance last time out against Sadam Ali. For those interested in the draw the odds are generally 25/1, though they are as high as 33/1.
As for the method of victory the favoured outcome is Pacquiao by decision, at 4/6. That seems to suggest that the bookies believe Vargas is a tough fighter, and he has never been stopped, or that Pacquiao's potency really has gone. A decision for the Filipino can be got at 5/2. As for Vargas the decision is 9/1, showing how unlikely they think the outcome is. Vargas by stoppage is seen as a 16/1 show by a number of bookies, which is a tiny bit appealing given that Vargas stopped Ali last time out and really rocked Timothy Bradley late in their bout.
Whilst Pacquiao is rightfully the favourite we can't help but think this will be tougher than the odds are suggesting for the Filipino.
