Earlier today saw the Japanese boxing awards for May having their winners announced, and this month there will only by two awards handed out, rather than the usual three.
The MVP for the month of May is Japanese Middleweight champion Hikaru Nishida (16-8-1, 7) [西田 光], who defeated Tomohiro Ebisu (17-5, 17) [胡 朋宏] at the start of May. The talented Nishida defeated Ebisu in a Japanese Middleweight title unification bout, unifying his title with the interim title held by Ebisu, and he did so in a genuinely fantastic bout that was well worth watching.
The State of the Art, or new comer, award was won by 24 year old hopeful Genki Ishikawa (9-1, 5) [石川元希] who scored a career defining victory on May 6th when he over-came the very experienced Motoki Sasaki (42-11-1, 26) [佐々木 基樹], who announced his retirement soon after the bout.
There was, sadly, no one deemed appropriate for the Fighting Spirit award.
Nishida and Ishikawa will be handed their awards on June 15th at the Korakuen Hall.
