Yesterday fight fans around the world saw Roman Gonzalez (46-1, 38) suffer an upset loss against Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (42-4-1, 38) [ศรีสะเกษ นครหลวงโปรโมชั่น] losing both his unbeaten record and the WBC Super Flyweight title.
Covering the bout for Japanese TV was WBO Super Flyweight champion Naoya Inoue (12-0, 10) [井上 尚弥] who turned to Instagram following the contest and essentially revealed that his reason for still being at 115lbs was no long.
There had been talk, for several years now, of Gonzalez and Inoue facing off, with talk focussing on a December 2017 date, with both men expected to face mandatories through the year and prepare for the show down between the two best little men in the sport.
Sadly it seems that Gonzalez's defeat has totally destroyed any purpose for that bout, and it now looks likely that Inoue will abandon the division and pursue a third divisional world title at Bantamweight.
Although it's unclear when he will leave the division, it's likely that he willdefend his Super Flyweight title in May, then move up. Potentially making a Bantamweight debut in the fall.
