The frustrating and inconsistent judged Olympic boxing continued today and we again got to see some of that poor officiating, which clearly cost Irishman Michael Conlan a medal
In the female 51KG division the very experienced Ren Cancan moved on to the next round with a decision win over Canadian Mandy Bujold. The win for Cancan assures her of a bronze medal, unfortunately however she will be up against Nicola Adams in the semi-final.
The aforementioned Conlan seemed to easily beat Russian 56KG fighter Vladimir Nikitin, who had already been given a gift against Chachai Butdee. Nikitin will be facing American Shakur Stevenson in the next round after Stevenson easily over-came Erdenbaat Tsendbaatar Mongolian in the quarter-final. The judges have robbed us of a brilliant fight between Stevenson and Conlan, they've robbed Conlan of a medal and have further shown why Olympic boxing is still considered a joke.
At 64KG's we saw a Russian score a very fair win, with Vitaliy Dunaytsev out boxing China's Hu Qianxun to progress to the final 4. There he will meet very fortunate Uzbek Fazliddin Gaibnazarov, who appeared very fortunate to take a split decision against American Gary Russell, who has the right to feel aggrieved given his opponent refused to fight during either of the final 2 rounds.
