At the start of this week we heard rumours that the May 9th Flyweight bout between Filipino power puncher Rey Megrino (21-20-3, 18) and unbeaten Brit Khalid "Kal" Yafai (14-0, 9) was off. Sadly however getting the story confirmed, one way or another, was difficult with the questions regarding the bout being ignored whilst Yafai posted training pictures on his social media accounts.
Today however it's been confirmed that the bout is off after Yafai suffered a hand injury that has forced him to cancel the bout with Megrino, but fight a different opponent on the same night.
Whilst we understand that Yafai's injury has kept him out of training we also need to feel sorry for Megrino who is missing out on a fantastic chance to make a name for himself in the UK. Sadly for Megrino it's another set back and as a result it may well see him being kept out of the ring for a full 12 months, a frustrating outcome given that he had also seen a fight with Carlos Cuadras fall apart last year and struggles with inactivity could, potentially, cost him his #9 WBC Flyweight world ranking.
The cynical among us may well feel that the injury was a timely excuse to avoid Megrino, who is significantly better than his record suggests. However if the bout does end up being rescheduled then fair enough to the Brit and his team, if however Yafai choose to go another route in the future we do need to wonder whether those cynics are perhaps on to something
