In May we saw Thailand's Jomthong Chuwatana challenge for the WBA Super Featherweight "super" title. As a result of challenging for the world title Jomthong had to vacate the OPBF title that he had held prior to his world title fight.
Today it was announced that the currently vacant OPBF Super Featherweight title would be up for grabs on August 30th at a Dangan show where the bout will be one of two OPBF title fights.
Competing for the title will be two very talented young fighters in the form of Masayuki Ito (16-1-1, 7) and Dai Iwai (17-3-1, 6).
For Ito this will be his first bout since his razor thin win to Rikki Naito back in February in a Japanese title fight that could easily have gone either way. Although that bout resulted in Ito's first loss there shouldn't be any dent to his confidence considering the way he fought and it's clear he'll go into this fight feeling like he should still be an unbeaten fighter.
As for Iwai he's actually on a great run, on paper at least, with 8 straight wins dating back over 2 years. Although his competition has been middling, at best, he's shown very good skills so far in to his career.
For those expecting a war, this probably won't be an all out slugfest but it will be a very highly skilled battle between to very talented fighters. Whilst we all love a slug out we suspect this bout will be a very enjoyable contest of skills, speed and movement. A real treat for fans of the sweet science.
