We've known for a while that OPBF Super Featherweight champion Masayuki Ito (18-1-1, 8) [伊藤 雅雪] would be defending his title on April 28th at the Korakuen Hall. Today we learned who he would be defending the title again, and we must admit that the bout does look like a step backwards for the talented, though often over-looked, champion.
The opponent in question is Filipino 24 year old Ernie Sanchez (15-7-1, 6).
Sanchez comes in to the bout in awful form, having won just 1 of his last 6 bouts, with that win being a 19 second blow out against the very poor Ji Hoon Cha. More recently we've seen Sanchez stopped in 3 by Oscar Valdez and he has also been stopped recently by Sergey Lipinets.
Whilst Sanchez has gone the distance with the likes of Andres Gutierrez and Rey Vargas those bouts were fought at a lower weight and it seems almost certain that he will not be able to provide much of a test to Ito, who is really coming into his own in recent fights.
This bout will be one of two title bouts on the show, with the other being a Japanese Welterweight title contest between reigning champion Hiroyuki Shindo (17-3-1, 6) [新藤 寛之] and mandatory challenger Toshio Arikawa (12-4, 10) [有川 稔男].
