Last week we reported that OPBF Super Featherweight champion Masayuki Ito (18-1-1, 8) [伊藤 雅雪] would be defending his title on April 28th against Filipino opponent Ernie Sanchez (15-7-1, 6). Sadly today we have learned that that bout will not be taking place, at least not in late April, after Ito suffered an injury.
As a result of the injury Ito will be out of the ring, with his return now expected to be in June. What's unclear is whether he will be facing Sanchez, or another opponent on his return, though in all honesty Sanchez wasn't a great choice of opponent given the depth in the division regionally and Sanchez's recent form, which has been pretty awful in all honesty.
The news is disappointing in many ways, with Ito's promising career put on ice for a few months and Sanchez likely to lose out on his title chance, though the show will go on with the main event being a Japanese Welterweight title fight between reigning champion Hiroyuki Shindo (17-3-1, 6) [新藤 寛之] and mandatory challenger Toshio Arikawa (12-4, 10) [有川 稔男].
