It was announced over the past few days that the WBC Female Minimumweight champion Mari Ando (11-6, 5) will be making the first defence of her world title on May 17th at the Azalea Taisho.
Ando, who won the title back in December with a split decision victory over Jasseth Noriega, will be fighting against fellow Japanese fighter Yuko Kuroki (10-4-1, 6). Kuroki, who comes in tot his bout as genuine top contender.
The champion first made her name by winning the WBA Atomweight title back in 2011 with a victory over Thailand's Amara Kokietgym. Ando held that title for almost a year before losing it to Ayaka Miyao in 2012. Since then she has been a staple on the world stage with world title fights against Ayaka Miyao, Su Yun Hong and Jasseth Noriega. The victory over Noriega has helped Ando become a 2-weight world champion.
Kuroki may never have won a won a world title herself but the 23 year old has shown the potential to one day be a world champion. Early in her career she had a very hard fought loss with Naoko Shibata, she also suffered a loss to the excellent Etsuko Tada in a world title fight and suffered a draw and a loss to Saemi Hanagata in very competitive fights.
Although no other details of this card have been announced we've got to acknowledge that the main event looks fantastic, especially for female boxing fans.
