On December 31st fans in Japan will have the chance to see Kohei Kono (30-8, 13) make the first defence of the WBA Super Flyweight title as he battles against Dominican fighter Norberto Jimenez (20-8-3, 10). Today fans had the chance to see Kono preparing or that bout as he took part in his public training session.
The well liked fighter from the Watanabe gym was open about the frustration from the previous year, which has seem him kept out of the ring for much of the year due to political issues with the WBA, the JBC and the Kameda's. He did however state that he still has the same desire as ever and that desire showed as he hit the mitts with ferocious force and looked like he was hitting harder than ever.
Although known as "Tough Boy" Kono has admitted that his style has gone from that of fighter to a more polished boxer in recent times. We'll admit we hope to see Kono the fighter on New Years Eve and it does seem likely as the fighter himself hinted that he would be hoping to stop Jimenez, who will be fighting in his first world title bout.
