The last few weeks haven't been great for Japanese prospects in and around 122lbs, with fighters like Sho Nakazawa and Naoto Uebayashi both suffering recent shock defeats. Today however was a great day for one such prospect, who scored the biggest win of his career so far.
That fighter was former amateur stand out Kazuki Tanaka (5-0, 4) [田中一樹] who made light world of former world champion Denkaosan Kaovichit (63-7-1, 26) [เด่นเก้าแสน เก้าวิชิต].
Tanaka took the initiative straight away, using his speed and youth to jab and move against the Thai veteran in the open round.
In round 2 Tanaka started to hold his ground more, let his shots go and do damage to Denkaosan, who was dropped from a body shot that left the Thai in agony. That shot kept the Thai down.
Following the bout Tanaka admitted that the shot was one he had been working on in practice, and it did show.
That however wasn't the big post-fight story, instead that was official announcement that Denkaosan was done, with the Thai announcing following the loss that he was retiring form the sport. Fingers crossed that he keeps to that retirement before becoming just a stepping stone to fighters on their way up, like Tanaka.
