Earlier this month we reported that Japan's popular and exciting Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-3-1, 22) would return to action on October 3rd to face Filipino Mike Mirafuentes (3-1-1) at the Korakuen Hall.
Earlier today however we were informed that Mirafuentes was out of the bout and that he had been replaced by countryman Nelson Gulpe (8-5, 3).
At the moment we're unsure why Kamegai's opponent has changed though unfortunately it doesn't seem to have been an improvement, with Gulpe offering next to nothing to challenge the former OPBF Welterweight champion. In fact Gulpe comes in to this bout following 5 straight losses, including a decision defeat to Accel Sumiyoshi, last time he was in Japan, and a 4th round KO loss to Chalermpol Singwancha.
Whilst Kamegai has gone 1-2 in his last 3, and 3-3- in his last 6, he has been fighting at a much higher level than Gulpe and that's likely to show when the two face off in early October. It is however a disappointing hope coming for Kamegai who has fought his last 3 bouts in the US, rather than in his home of Tokyo.
