On Saturday night Filipino fighter Joebert Alvarez (15-1-1, 7), dubbed the "Little Pacman", scored the biggest win of his career as he shocked the once touted Jonathan "Bomba" Gonzalez (18-2-1-1, 12) in Puerto Rico.
The under-rated Filipino had caught the attention of numerous hardcore fans in 2014, when he pushed unified Flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada very close in a non title bout. Although the score-cards for that bout suggested a near white-wash for Estrada the Mexican was somewhat fortunate to take home a win whilst Alvarez had left an impression that he was a highly capable, and very under-rated youngster with a big future ahead of him.
Sadly following the Estrada bout Alvarez had been inactive, that was until Saturday when he returned in style stopping Gonzalez in the 6th round of their clash to claim the WBO NABO and WBC FECARBOX Flyweight titles.
Whilst Alvarez's only loss had been an ultra-competitive one the same couldn't be said of Gonzalez, who had been stopped by Giovanni Segura. Despite the stoppage loss Gonzalez was the favourite and was expected to over-come Alvarez en route to earning a world title fight. He had been a stand out amateur claiming a Gold medal at the 2008 World Youth Championships and was a 3-time Puerto Rican national champion. This result however leaves his career in tatters whilst Alvarez may well be moving towards a world title fight of his own, or at the very least, another bout against a notable opponent.
