Yesterday in Mexico fans and media had the chance to see the weigh in for this weekend's big show from Baja California. The show, which is being televised in both the US and Mexico, is headlined by a brilliant female title fight though also features a promising Filipino fighter on the under-card.
That Filipino is former Flyweight world title challenger Jether Oliva (22-2-2, 10) who will be looking to record the biggest win of his career as he takes on the unbeaten Luis Nery (15-0, 1). For Oliva this will be his return to Mexico, where he challenged Ulises Solis back in 2011 for the IBF Flyweight title, and his third fight on the road, following a narrow loss to Moruti Mthalane in South Africa last year.
Originally the bout was contracted at 116lbs though both men agreed to to change that slightly and at the weigh in both men made the new limit, 117lbs. For Oliva this is a career high and he is 4lbs heavier than he was in his previous high, back in May 2013 against Ronnie Sunido. In fact it's astonishing that he's looked so good at the weigh in considering he was just 108lbs 2 fights back against Wilber Andogan. For Nery this is his his second lightest ever weight, his only lighter weight came in November 2012 when he beat Joan Sandoval.
Although the smaller man naturally we suspect Oliva will be full of confidence and knows that a win here will put him on the way to another world title fight. It's a big ask but Oliva has impress in both bouts on the road and both of those have come against naturally better fighters than Nery.
