In mid-May we reported that Suyon Takayama (24-1, 8) [高山 樹延] would face Australia Jack Brubaker (10-1-1, 5) for the OPBF Welterweight title on July 25th at the Korakuen Hall. Now we are able to confirm that that bout won't be the only title bout on the show, with the promoter also announcing that Japanese Light Welterweight champion Hiroki Okada (12-0, 10) [岡田 博喜] would also be defending his title on the show, with the heavy handed and unbeaten national champion set to defend against Japanese-Brazilian Cristiano Aoqui (11-4-2, 7) [青木クリスチャーノ].
The bout between Okada and Aoqui will act as the co-main event for the card and could see Okada extending his reign and recording a 5th title defense. The champion has looked fantastic already this year, with two stoppage wins, and will know that a win over Aoqui could see him move towards a potential OPBF title fight later in the year.
For Aoqui the bout is a chance to claim a Japanese title, and build on a thrilling win over Ryosuke Takami earlier this year.
Interesting Aoqui was once lined up to fight Takayama for a Japanese Welterweight title, though this bout seems a much more interesting one one than that would have been with Aoqui unlikely to be competitive at 147lbs.
