Earlier today Japanese fans saw rising youngster Daigo Higa (9-0, 9) [比嘉大吾] record the second defense of the WBC Youth Flyweight title. The bout saw Higa score a 2nd round victory over Filipino challenger Romel Oliveros (6-2-1, 1), who was down 4 times during the 2nd round.
Following the bout Higa's mentor, and former world champion, Yoko Gushiken [具志堅 用高] seemed to suggest that his charge would be back in the ring in Summer and this time Higa would be stepping up in class.
The aim now is to get Higa in a bout for either the Japanese or OPBF titles in the summer with the youngster hoping to begin competing at world level next year. Ambitious but it's sort of ambition and excitement that has helped Higa grow a notable following.
If Higa was to fight for the Japanese title he would likely be facing he winner of the March 18th bout Takuya Kogawa and Masayuki Kuroda, who are set to meet in a potentially explosive clash. As for the OPBF title, that would see Higa challenge Filipino veteran Ardin Diale, who incidentally lost an OPBF title fight against Higa's stablemate Koki Eto back in 2014
