The Philippines is a breeding ground of boxing talent. It's given us copious fighters of note over the years and the search for the country's next star is on going with every exciting younger fighter being compared to modern greats such as Manny Pacquioa and Nonito Donaire. One of those men who is being eyed as a potential champion is youngster Harmonito Dela Torre (14-0, 9).
Dela Torre has been on several of the Top Rank shows in Macau and has now been signed to a management deal with former world champion Zab Judah and his “Super Judah Management Group” who seems set to help Dela Torre make a name for himself in the west.
From what we understand this could see see Dela Torre back in the ring, in the US, in May as he looks to fit in 3 fights this year. We suspect the first of those will be at a lesser level as Judah gets a chance to fully assess the talent of the Filipino youngster who is still a very long way from reach his prime as a fighter.
Although Dela Torre hasn't yet fought under the Judah banner he has impressed Judah in the past with the former world champion describing the 20 year old Filipino in a glowing manner.
