Overnight it was announced that Filipino puncher Froilan "The Sniper" Saludar (21-1-1, 13) would get a long awaited world title fight as he has agreed terms to fight the brilliant Juan Francisco Estrada (31-2, 22) in a bout for the WBA "super" and WBO Flyweight titles.
The much touted Filipino fighter, 25, came to the attention of boxing fans relatively early in his career with an impressive string of wins over the likes of Jecker Buhawe, Liempetch Sor Veerapol, and Jack Amisa. Sadly however his career has faltered in recent years with the fighting spending almost 12 months out of the ring and suffering an eye catching stoppage loss to McWilliams Arroyo in an IBF title eliminator last year.
Since the loss to Arroyo we've seen Saludar pick up low profile wins to rebuild his confidence.
As for Estrada, AKA "Gallo", he really came to the attention of boxing fans in 2012 when he gave Roman Gonzalez an hellacious war in a brilliant Light Flyweight bout. Since then he has gone 5-0 (2) with wins over the likes of Brian Viloria, to claim the unified Flyweight crown, the then unbeaten Milan Melindo, Richie Mepranum, the heavy handed Giovani Segura and, most recently, Joebert Alvarez.
Last time out Estrada looks less than impressive, struggling past the little known Joebert Alvarez, though his talent has been proven and some would make a case for him to be on the fringes of the pound-for-pound list.
The bout is set for March 28th and will take place at the Poliforum Zamna, in Yucatán, Mexico. It will be Saludar's second bout outside of the Philippines following his loss to Arroyo, which was fought in Puerto Rico.
