Earlier today fight fans in the Sangyo Hall in Kanazawa saw former OPBF Super Featherweight title challenger Ernie Sanchez (17-9-1, 8) score a very surprising TKO win over the usually teak tough veteran Hurricane Futa (22-7-1, 13) [ハリケーン風太].
The fight looked like a potential fire fight on paper, with both fighters having under-rated power and solid chins, and unsurprisingly it was a real fight with bombs from both. Unfortunately for Futa it was the power of Sanchez will told first, causing a cut over Futa's eye early.
The cut should have made Futa more wary but instead it seemed like he wasn't worried. In round 5 Sanchez's power told again as he landed a right hand, dropping Futa. Futa's toughness saw him recover to his feet but soon afterwards he took another right hand and the bout was stopped.
For Futa the stoppage was his first ever stoppage defeat, with Sanchez doing something the monstrously hard hitting Jhonny Gonzalez failed to do in 2015. As for Sanchez the win probably counts as his biggest to date, and although he is now 3-6-1 in his last 10 he is a real danger man and will always be a genuine threat at this type of level.
