One of the many interesting world title bouts this weekend sees a WBC Flyweight champion Juan Hernandez Navarrete (34-2, 25) defending his belt against aggressive Japanese youngster Daigo Higa (12-0, 12) [比嘉 大吾]. Today the two men under-went their medical check ups ahead of Saturday's bout.
At the medical both men passed their tests with no real issue, but there was some interesting information revealed about both fighters.
Firstly Higa is the taller man, boasting a 2cm height advantage over Hernandez. Despite that edge in height it's fair to say that Higa isn't a fighter who fights tall, instead applying the pressure and ripping the combinations up close. Being the shorter man seemed to surprise Hernandez, however the Mexican did have the edge in reach, by 1cm.
It was also interesting to note that Higa had a visual acuity of 2.0 in both eyes, whilst Hernandez was a 1.0 in his left eye and a 0.9 in his right eye, suggesting his vision isn't as sharp as that of the challenger. The visual measurements lead to Yoko Gushiken joking about having a 3.0 vision and seeing into the future where Higa has beaten Hernandez. Like wise Higa seemed to suggest that Heranndez isn't as scary looking as he expected, and that he was predicting a win for himself, as looks to claim a world title in his firest world title bout, to become the youngest active champion in the sport.
