WBA Atomweight champion Ayaka Miyao (17-5-1, 2) retained her title earlier today with a very rare stoppage victory.
Miyao, defending her belt for the 4th time was expected to be too hard working and too experienced for Thai challenger Buangern OnesongchaiGym (10-5-1, 1). What few, including ourselves, expected however was that this bout would be decided by Miyao's power and that it would fail to go the scheduled 10 rounds.
Miyao looked the crisper and more skilled fighter almost from the off and although her lack of power is well known it seemed she had extra sting on her shots than Buangern, who was simply struggling to cope with the champion.
With Buangern being worn down, Miyao upped the pressure and in round 5 she unloaded on Buangern in the corner eventually sending the Thai down for the count.
This stoppage was Miyao's first since stopped Mami Ito almost 3 years ago, as for Buangern this is her second stoppage loss in world title bouts after having also been stopped in a WBO Minimumweight title bout by Su-Yun Hong.
