Earlier today we were informed that former OPBF and Japanese Welterweight and PABA Light Middleweight champion Akinori Watanabe (33-5, 28) [渡部あきのり] was transferring gyms.
The heavy handed fighter has left the Noguchi gym and will be fighting under the Kadoebi banner in the future as he looks to return to title level.
Last time out we saw Watanabe suffer a 6th round loss to Toshio Arikawa, in what was an upset but doesn't look a bad result for Watanabe given that Arikawa has since gone on to win the Japanese title title. That was way back in November 2015 and since then he has seemingly focused on how to bounce back and get his career back on track.
The hard hitting 31 year old began his career 2004 and progressed to 16-0 (15), with 15 straight stoppages, before suffering his first defeat, to Tadashi Yuba. That was followed by successive defeats that saw Watanabe fall to 16-3 (15) but since then he has gone 17-2 (28) and remains in the mix for a Japanese another Japanese title fight.
