October 08th 2015-Siam Paradise Entertainment Centre, Ngam Wong Wan Bangkok, Thailand Wanheng Menayothin (38-0, 13) v Ardi Buyung (2-4) Earlier this week Thai fans had an interesting but small show. In one of those bouts fans saw current WBC Minimumweight champion Wanheng Menayothin take on Indonesian fighter Ardi Buyung in what was little more than a stay busy fight for the talented Thai, who will return to the ring in November to defend his title. June 2nd 2015- Ramintra , Bangkok, Thailand Wanheng Menayothin (37-0, 12) Vs Jerry Tomogdan (17-5-3, 9) On Tuesday Thai fans saw WBC Minimumweight world champion Wanheng Menayothin attempt to continue his unbeaten run as he took on Filipino challenger Jerry Tomogdan. The bout was widely considered a mismatch though the the idea of the bout was to keep Wanheng busy before a potential mandatory title fight later in the year. The second Hagler bout came just last year in what was Wanheng's 35th professional bout and his final warm up before finally stepping up to world class for the first time. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) November 11th 2011- Thabo, Nong Khai, Thailand Wanheng Menayothin (18-0, 5) Vs Crison Omayao (13-2-1, 4) In recent years we've seen Crison Omayao travel over to Japan to take on their top prospects such as Naoya Inoue and Kosei Tanaka and most recently, Genki Hanai. Prior to those bouts Omayao had shown some genuine promise, as shown back in 2011 when he took on the rising Thai Wanheng Menayothin and managed to be very competitive against the talented Thai who has since gone on to claim the WBC Minimumweight title. *Note-It appears Wanheng fought under the Kaiyanghadaogym banner for this bout (Video courtesy of Thairec.com) April 27th 2012- Nakhon Pathom, Thailand Wanheng Menayothin (21-0, 6) Vs Boy Tanto (4-9) Thailand's Wanheng Menayothin has had a long career despite not fighting many fighters of note. Part of that was the fact he was developing, honing his skills and smoothing off the rough edges and building up experience. Sadly many of those experience building fights saw Wanheng fighting horrible out matched foes such as Boy Tanto who was made to look completely hopeless when he battled Wanheng back in 2012. February 5th 2015- Nakhon Sawan, Thailand Wanheng Menayothin (36-0, 12) vs Jeffrey Galero (11-0, 5) It's fair to suggest that 2015 has taken it's time to get going though, a little more than 30 days in to the year, we've finally had the first world title fight in Asia as Wanehng Menayothin, the WBC Minimumweight champion, put his title on the line against unbeaten Filipino challenger Jeffrey Galero. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) The Minimumweight has, in 2014, been the division to follow. It's had everything a fight fan could hope to see and has almost certainly given up more action, pound-for-pound, than any other divisions this year. The most recent fight of note saw Thailand's Wanheng Menayothin take on WBC world champion Oswaldo Novoa in a highly entertaining scrap that was fought at a very high pace with neither looking like he wanted the bout to go the distance. We won't pretend it was the best fight in the division this year, or even the past week or so, but it was yet another cracking bout in the smallest division. There was no feeling out right, just action from the off as both men settled immediately and got down to work. If you didn't get to catch this one live we suggest you give it a watch now and then check out one of the other Minimumweight thrillers from this year such as the world title unification bout between Katsunari Takayama and Francisco Rodriguez Jr or the recent coming of age contest between wunderkind Kosei Tanaka and Ryuji Hara, you won't be disappointed by either of those either. (Video courtesy of ทีเคโอ มวยโลก) Thailand's Wanheng Menayothin may be on the verge of a world title fight but many of his better wins are against opponents just below the OPBF/PABA level such Indonesia's Heri Amol. In this bout we see Menayothin applying his constant pressure and sharp punching against an opponent who knows how to fight but doesn't show the desire that he had earlier in his career. Interestingly Menayothin actually did a lesser job on Amol than Japan's Ken Shiro who really looked a class act on debut when he boxed the socks off Amol. Styles make fights, of course, but it's due performances like this than some will question whether Menayothin really can take it up to the next level like he'll be hoping to against Oswaldo Novoa. Thailand's Wanheng Menayothin is a tough fighter to really "gauge" in terms of talent despite having won all 35 of his professional fights so far. Whilst we're not sure how good he really is there are some solid wins on his record, including this one against Japanese domestic contender Yuma Iwahashi, who would later come close to claiming the Japanese Minimumweight title against Go Odaira. What this fight showed was what Wanheng was about in the the ring. What he brought to a fight. That's a lot of intense pressure, sharp punching and although he appears to lack power he has good stamina and work rate to back up his pressure. The bout doesn't tell us about how well he really takes a shot or how he reacts when he's got a strong and powerful guy up against him but it certainly shows that he has plenty of skill, skill that could see him one day becoming a world champion. |
