January 3rd 2005-Ariake Colosseum, Tokyo, Japan Katsushige Kawashima (27-3, 18) vs Jose Navarro (21-0, 9) One of the most controversial decisions in Japan in recent years saw Katsushige Kawashima [川嶋勝重] battle against Jose Navarro in a WBC Super Flyweight title bout. April 10th 2004-M.E.N. Arena, Manchester, Lancashire, United Kingdom In-Jin Chi (27-2-1, 16) vs Michael Brodie (35-1-1, 23) II In 2003 British fans saw a thrilling contest when Korean slugger In Jin Chi [池仁珍] fought to a highly controversial draw with local fighter Michael Brodie. The controversy of he bout lead to an immediate rematch with the two men again engaging in a war. June 7th 1992-Olympic Fencing Gymnasium, Seoul, South Korea Kwang-Sun Kim (5-0, 4) Vs Humberto Gonzalez (33-1, 25) In 1988 Korean fighter Kwang Sun Kim [김광선] became a national hero as he claimed an Olympic gold at the Seoul Olympics. As a professional he was fast tracked, and in his 6th professional bout he took on WBC Light Flyweight champion Humberto Gonzalez. It was a huge ask for the Korean novice, but one his team felt confident about. June 17th 2000-Tokyo, Japan Young-Jin Cho (2-2, 1) vs Shin Yamato (16-2-4, 4) In 2000 Shin Yamato claimed the OPBF Super Bantamweight champion. In his first defense of that title he took on little known Korean Young Jin Cho. Cho was a former Korean Super Fly and Super Bantamweight but was completely unknown outside of Korea. Note-It is thought that Cho may have been in some "unrecorded" bouts as his boxrec has a notable period of inactivity. November 16th 1990-Kobe, Hyogo, Japan Seiji Asakawa (16-1-1, 12) vs Toshikazu Sono (5-4, 1) Boxing can see major upsets, maybe not regularly, but they do happen. One of the biggest upsets on the Japanese domestic scene saw Seiji Asakawa [淺川誠二], the then Japanese Featherweight champion, Toshikazu Sono [次王者園寿和]. Note-This is the abridged TV broadcast of the fight and not the full contest. March 7th 2015-Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Takumi Takahashi (6-4-1, 1) v Yukinori Hisanaga (16-5-2, 9) Upsets happen, they might not happen a lot, but they happen. Just ask Yukinori Hisanaga [久永 志則] who suffered a real shock last year when he faced Takumi Takahashi [高橋 拓海]. Coming in to this one Hisanaga had never been stopped and had actually been competitive with Hidenori Otake in a Japanese title fight. The bout was regarded as the biggest upset in a Japanese ring in 2015 and really was a surprise to every February 17th 1976-Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan Koichi Wajima (30-4-1, 24) vs Jae Doo Yuh (41-1-1, 25) II In 1975 Korean fighter Jae Doo Yuh [유제두] travelled to Japan and dethroned Japan's Koichi Wajima [輪島 功], the then WBA and Linear champion at 154lbs. The following year the two men rematched. October 10th 1962-Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan Fighting Harada (26-1, 10) vs Pone Kingpetch (25-3, 8) I In 1962 fans in the East saw legends colliding as Japan's Fighting Harada [ファイティング原田], then 19, challenged WBA Flyweight champion Pone Kingpetch [โผน กิ่งเพชร], the first Thai world champion. These two would rematch just 3 months later. February 5th 1996-Osaka-Jo Hall, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Yuri Arbachakov (21-0, 15) vs Raul Juarez (19-1, 11) In 1996 Japanese based Russian Yuri Arbachakov scored two defenses of the WBC Flyweight title. The first of those saw him face off against gutsy Mexican Raul Juarez. |
