December 15th 2012-Toyota Center, Houston, Texas, USA Nonito Donaire (30-1,19) vs Jorge Arce (61-6-2, 46) It's sad when a fighter goes on too long, and that was certainly the case with Jorge Arce. In 2012 then the 33 year old Arce, who was much older by boxing standards, battled against Filipino star Nonito Donaire. Arce, who had been a genuine legend, was washed up by this point and it was clear that Donaire, who was on ab absolute tear at the time, was never going to lose. October 13th 2012-Home Depot Center, Carson, California, USA Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24) Vs Nonito Donaire (29-1, 18) In 2012 we saw Japanese fighter Toshiaki Nishioka [西岡 利晃] fight for the final time, as a shadow of the "Speed King" fought "Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire. December 11th 2015-Coliseo Roberto Clemente, San Juan, Puerto Rico Nonito Donaire (35-3, 23) Vs Cesar Juarez (17-3, 13) One of the late contenders for the 2015 Fight of the Year came in Puerto Rico as popular Filipino Nonito Donaire was given an unexpected war by Cesar Juarez. If you missed this one you really did miss out on a bout that ended up being an unexpected thriller. April 19th 2009- Araneta Coliseum, Barangay Cubao, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines Nonito Donaire (20-1, 13) Vs Raul Martinez (24-0, 14) Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire has recently been criticised by boxing fans for various things. They have ranged from a lack of overall skill to a dependency on his power, from a lack of hunger in the ring to being "shot". One thing that can't be criticised however is the excitement, power and destruction that Donaire brought us in the lower weights. That destructive power left a pile of destruction in his wake, including the body of Raul Martinez, in what was one of Donaire's last bout in the Philippines*. (*At the time of writing this is correct, however Donaire is set to fight back in the Philippines in the coming weeks) It's feels sad to say this but it's been a really long time since we saw Nonito Donaire looking like an elite level fighter. Thankfully though their is footage of him looking sensationa, as he did when he moved to Bantamweight and brushed aside Volodymyr Sydorenko as if Sydorenko was a nobody. The bout was Donaire's Bantamweight debut and to say he looked great is an under-statement. The Filipino genuinely looked sensational. For those who want to remember how good Donaire was in his pomp this fight is a perfect showing of how good the "Filipino Flash" was. Back in 2007 Filipino youngster Nonito Donaire was an unknown fighter to many. His best win going in to the year was likely his win over Oscar Andrade for the NABF Super Flyweight title and he was on the outskirts of the division. By the end of the year however he was a star and a man that fans were all the more happy to see in action, a man some were viewing as a new stage on the scene and possibly a pound-for-pound legend of the future. The fight that "made" Donaire in many ways was huge huge upset win over the then unbeaten and much feared Vic Darchinyan. Going into the fight Darchinyan was 28-0 (22) he had been the IBF champion for close to 3 years and had stopped 9 of his previous 10 opponents, including the likes of Irene Pacheco, Luis Maldonado and Jose Victor Bugors. The only one of those 10 opponents who wasn't stopped was Glenn Donaire, who lost a 6th round technical decision to the free swinging champion. Glenn was Nonito's brother and although Darchinyan easily defeat Glenn he couldn't stop Nonito getting revenge and scoring one of the biggest upsets of the last 20 years with a stunning devastating KO that really put Donaire on the boxing map.
