February 22nd 2014-Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China Zou Shiming (3-0) Vs Yokthong Kokietgym (15-3, 11) Chinese boxing has grown a higher profile in recent years thanks, mostly, to former amateur stand out Zou Shiming [邹市明] who has managed to get Top Rank involved in boxing in China. In one of those early bouts Shiming took on Thailand's limited Yokthong KKP [หยกทอง ก่อเกียรติยิม]. April 9th 2011-MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Nobuhiro Ishida (22-6-2, 7) Vs James Kirkland (27-0, 24) It's fair to say that Japanese fighters haven't scored many wins that have made the world sit up and take note, one bout that did just that however saw Nobuhiro Ishida [石田 順裕] score a massive upset against the then highly regarded James Kirkland on American soil. Coming in to this bout Kirkland, a wild cannon with serious power, was expected to blitz Ishida but that expectation couldn't have been further from reality in a genuine shock for the international boxing world. July 8th 2011-Buffalo Bill's Star Arena, Primm, Nevada, USA Zhankhozh Turarov (5-0, 1) vs David Castillo (2-2) Kazakh hopeful Zhankhozh Turarov [Жанкош Тураров] is seen as one of the next generation of Kazakh fighters. In an early career bout he took on David Castillo in the US. January 29th 2016-5 Star Banquet Hall, Queens, New York, USA Zhankhozh Turarov (17-0, 12) vs Joaquim Carneiro (22-6, 20) Earlier this year unbeaten Kazakh hopeful Zhankhozh Turarov [Жанкош Тураров] was in the ring against the heavy handed, but fragile, Joaquim Carneiro. January 14th 2008-Bunka Gym, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan Katsushige Kawashima (32-6, 21) Vs Alexander Munoz (31-2, 27) The Ohashi gym is, right now, one of the most notable in Japan. It's first champion was Katsushige Kawashima [川嶋勝重] who closed out his career in 2008 following his bout against Alexander Munoz, who was fighting his 7th bout in the county. December 26th 2010-Super Arena, Saitama, Saitama, Japan Koki Kameda (23-1, 15) Vs Alexander Munoz (35-3, 27) During his excellent career Alexander Munoz fought 8 times in Japan. He won the first 7 of those bouts before running into Koki Kameda [亀田 興毅] in 2010, more than 8 years after he made his Japanese debut against Celes Kobayashi December 16th 2000-Forum Bicentenario, de la Universidad de Aragua, Maracay, Venezuela Sornpichai Kratingdaenggym (20-1, 16) Vs Alexander Munoz (16-0, 16) Thailand's Sornpichai Kratingdaenggym [ศรพิชัย กระทิงแดงยิม] fought abroad a number of times, with one of those fights coming Venezuela against future champion Alexander Munoz. This bout was Sornpichai's second bout since he lost the WBA Flyweight in the US to Eric Morel. March 6th 2004-Super Arena, Saitama, Saitama, Japan Hideki Todaka (21-3-1, 10) Vs Julio Zarate (20-2-1, 13) In recent weeks we've heard about the WBA phasing out their multiple title system, however it's been an on going "issue" for more than a decade now. Way back in 2004 Hideki Todaka [戸高 秀樹] claimed the WBA interim Bantamweight title, avenging a loss to Leo Gamez in the process, and in his first defense he faced Julio Zarate. Although Todaka did win the belt during a period of inactivity from "regular" champion Johnny Bredahl he won the title only 20 days before Bredahl defended the belt, and incidentally this bout came just a week before Bredahl took on Nobuaki Naka. March 11th 2001-Arena, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan Celes Kobayashi (22-4-3, 13) Vs Leo Gamez (33-7-1, 25) In 2001 Japan's Celes Kobayashi [セレス小林] got his second shot at a world title as he took on Venezuelan legend Leo Gamez for the WBA Super Flyweight title. Gamez, a 4 weight world champion, was looking to record the first defense of the title that he had won the previous year. |
