We've covered a lot of songs from Japan, a handful from Thailand and the Philippines and even a few from South Korea but this is the first we've got to from Indonesia and is dubbed "The New Dragon Song", with Jemz Celosse working alongside Indonesian boxing great Chris John. We're not sure who Jemz Celosse is but with title of the song and Chris John being involved it's clear what our focus here is. John, the former WBA Featherweight champion, is the most successful Indonesian fighter of all time but his success really doesn't transfer over to the field of music, as we found out here. Musically it's not the worst we've heard, but being totally honest it's not among our favourites either. Still it's nice to have something from Indonesia in this series and fingers crossed we get more from the region in the future.

Sometimes we stumble on things that just seem odd and that's the case here with the 1970's track "Southpaw" by Japanese duo Pink Lady. Although there's no boxer involved in the video, and the song is certainly not sung by a boxer we can't help but think the name has a clear link to boxing and, years after the song was released, it was actually used by Momo Koseki as her ring entrance song. We will be totally honest and say it's a song we don't like, but it's a song that deserve's a mention on this weekly section where we try to bring the world of musical and boxing together. Don't expect anything musically great here but still something a little bit weird. Note - From what we under-stand the lyrics are actually about baseball, but with southpaw also being a boxing term we've decided to include the song here. Japanese boxer Masayuki Koguchi is certainly not a name we expect many fans to recognise, unless they were Japanese fans around the start of the millennium, but certainly generated a lot of notoriety due to a number of wig related incidents. Those incidents saw him earning the nickname "The Wig Boxer". The various incidents with the wigs saw him ending up with various hair growth sponsors and, in 2006, he also featured in a music video for a song recorded by Japanese comedian Yurika Super Special Q. The song, called, "HAGE = RAP ~ Bald Revolution ★ Signal of the Beginning ~" is a comedy song, but is still rather good, and well worthy of a listen for what is clearly a tongue in cheek rap. It's njoyable, silly and allows Koguchi, who's wig once fell off in an actual fight, to poke fun at himself. We begin the new year with some more musical fun! This time some in ring karaoke, as opposed to the Karaoke we shared on Christmas day! In recent year's been serenaded by Tyson Fury after a bout, and some may even remember Daiki Kameda doing the same thing in the 2010's. What we have here is an older example of a boxer singing after winning a bout. This is Japanese Light Middleweight Koichi Wajima singing to the fans after defending the WBC and WBA titles in 1972 against Matt Donovan. Donovan was stopped in 3 rounds and the champion, still full of energy, showed there was more to him than his ability to box as he entertained the fans at the Nihon University Auditorium. This is admittedly quite a short clip, but it's clear that Wajima was a natural entertainer. |
