Aktobe, Kazakhstan
We get title action in Kazakhstan, with two domestic title bouts taking place in Aktobe. Sadly however they don’t don’t look the most even of bouts on paper.

At Lightweight Kazakh champion Nurtas Azhbenov (15-1, 5) will make his first defense, taking on Zamanbek Danabekov (4-1, 2). The 30 year old Azhbenov has been a professional since 2018, and fought much of his early career in the UK, where his lack of power really sucked drama from his bouts. As he's progressed as a professional, he has still failed to really develop power, and that has held him back, despite returning to Kazakhstan where he has fought 10 of his last 11 bouts, including a loss to Isa Chaniev. As for Danabekov all of his bouts so far have been in Kazakhstan, and all against professional novices, with non going more than 6 rounds. It's almost impossible to get any real read on how good he is, especially given he's not had a fight in almost 4 years. Sadly this is the level of the domestic Kazakh scene right now, and might be for a while, as the domestic level needs to be built up over the coming years.

The other title bout will see the inaugural Kazakh Super Bantamweight champion being crowned, as Aidos Medet (12-0, 8) takes on Kanagat Manatuly (6-1, 4), in another bout that makes it clear just how undeveloped the Kazakh professional scene is. Medet has scored 11 wins at home, and in Turkey, in 2023, and has been inactive for well over a year now. He is really untested, and despite being 12-0, it's hard to have any idea how good he is, as his competition really has been dire. Manatuly on the other hand last fought back in 2021 as a Flyweight, and has never fought above Super Flyweight, making it seem clear he’s going to be the much smaller man in the ring for this one.

Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines
We get more title action in the Philippines, with Asian Boxing Federation Fly and Super Flyweight title fights being scheduled for a show in Bacolod City.

The Flyweight bout will see the unbeaten John Michael Zulueta (17-0-3, 10) look to keep his unbeaten run going as he takes on former world title challenger Komgrich Nantapech (38-14-1, 28). The 29 year old Zulueta has won 17 of his last 18, but has been fighting at a low level and his last 6 wins have been at a very low level in Thailand. Despite being unbeaten he really is untested. As for Komgrich, he was, once, a solid contender giving Dinnie Nietes a tough bout in 2017 and putting up a fair effort against Juan Carlos Revecco the same year, losing to both but not embarrassing himself. Sadly however that was almost a decade ago and he is 16-9-1 since then and a win over him no longer means what it once did.

As for the Super Flyweight title bout, that will see former OPBF Flyweight champion Jayr Raquinel (17-2-1, 13) fight a yet to be announced opponent. Raquinel is among the best fighters to have not landed a world title fight, with wins against the likes of Takuya Kogawa, Landile Ngxeke and most recently Yahir Alan Frank Verdugo. He has proven he’s fringe world class so far and really just needs the opportunity to compete against the best, sadly however with no opponent named for his bout at the time of writing it feels that this bout will be something of a stay busy fight, rather than a real test, for someone who deserves a big fight.

Juroku Plaza, Gifu, Gifu, Japan
Over in Gifu we get a small card from Gifu Yokozeki Promotions, with most of the bouts being 4 rounders. The one exception to that is an 8 rounder, which will see Ruito Saeki (11-6-1, 3) take on Bakuto Nakahara (6-6, 3) in what looks like a clear mismatch. Saeki is best known as the only fighter to have gone the distance with Mikito Nakano, though he has been stopped in 2 of his 5 other losses including a loss to former world champion Shun Kubo. Notably he has won 4 of his last 5 and does seem to have some momentum going. As for Nakahara he has had mixed form, and is stepping up massively here, despite that he does tend to make for fun fights and the styles of the two men should gel well here.

Qayyum Sports Complex, Peshawar, Pakistan
We also get a title bout in Pakistan, though much like the Kazakh show, it’s one that seems to show just how low level the domestic scene is, as Amin Ul Haq (7-11-1, 5) takes on Farhan Hasan (4-7, 3) for the Pakistani Lightweight title. Ul Haq is an Afghan born-Pakistani based fighter 1-7-1 in his last 9, and has been stopped in 5 of those 7 losses. Hasan on the other hand was fighting as a Flyweight back in 2021, and was a Featherweight earlier this year, when he was stopped by a debutant. It’s good to see domestic titles from Pakistani, and Kazakhstan for that matter, but they need a domestic scene for them to make sense, and a bout like this does not bode well for the domestic title picture.

York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, United Kingdom
In the UK we’ll see once beaten Kazakh Ray Seitzhanov (11-1, 7) take on Octavian Gratii (8-83-4, 4) in what appears to be a massive mismatch. The 26 year old Seitzhanov was stopped last time out, by Vadim Musaev, which was his unbeaten record come to an end, and whilst this is a massive step back, we do understand an easier fight following a recent loss. As for Gratii, the 33 year old Romanian is a professional loser of sorts, however he is someone who goes round, and has only been stopped 3 times in 83 losses. Amazingly this will be his 12th bout of 2025 following 22 fights in 2024. Whilst Gratii hasn't scored a win since November 2021, when he upset Yaser Yuksel in German, losing 63 in a row since then, he has become a staple on the European scene, fighting all over the continent, including in Greenland where he took part in the first ever pro boxing contest in the country. Gratii is there to lose, but will be expecting to take Seitzhanov the distance here.

March 8th-World title action in Argentina, OPBF Silver tilte fights in Bangkok!

This coming Saturday we get an interesting day of action, albeit mostly at a lower level. The most notable of which will take place in Bangkok, where we have a number of OPBF “silver” title fights.

The most interesting of the 3 OPBF Silver title fights will see destructive 23 year old Hiroki Horiike (4-0, 3) make his international debut, and fight for his first title, as he faces once beaten Chinese fighter Yeerlan Nuerlanbieke (8-1-1, 4) for the OPBF Silver title at 140lbs. Horiikke has looked like a star in the making, and despite being tested by the rugged LeQuan Wang, he came out on top in that bout and will have learned a lot from the experience of that fight. As for Nuerlanbieke he’s been a professional since 2018 and he won his first 7, but has gone 1-1-1 in his last 3, dating back to 2022, didn't fight at all in 2023, and was stopped in his last fight, by Bayarkhuu Ganbaatar in south Korea in 2023. With the lay off and the KO loss it’s hard to imagine Nuerlanbieke being sharp enough for Horiikke but he should be tough enough to take him rounds.

In a really matched nout Japan’s Katsuya Murakami (16-3-1, 4) takes on former world title challenger Komgrich Nantapech (37-13-1, 27) for the OPBF Silver Super Flyweight. The 30 year old Murakami will be having his second successive bout in Thailand, and looking to build on last year's win over Vichith Oat. Although he has never managed to win a Japanese title Murakami is a very solid domestic level fighter, who's most recent losses have been decisions to Yuga Inoue and Jukiya Iimura and despite being on away turf he will be full of confidence. As for Nantapech, the 35 year old Thai has become something of a shadow of the fighter he once was, though it is the better part of a decade from his best performances, including a competitive decision loss to Donnie Nietes in 2017. At his best the Thai was a solid regional level fighter with a 22-3 record, since then however he has gone 15-10-1 and has been stopped in 3 of his last 6. He is very much a faded force, and retirement looms for him.

The least interesting, at least on paper, is a clash between the popular Tom Mizokoshi (11-4-2, 5) and the rugged Guangheng Luan (9-8-2, 6), for the OPBF Silver Super Bantamweight title. The 25 year old Mizokoshi was being touted as a future face of Central Japan boxing when he was a 7-1-1 prospect, at the age of 21. He has failed to live up to the expectations many had for him at the time, going 4-3-1 since then, but he has gone unbeaten in his last 4, going 3-0-1, and appears to be building some momentum whilst also changing his in ring mentality. As for Luan, on paper he’s a “bum” but in reality he is one of the best journeymen in the region having gone the distance against the likes of Wulan Tuolehazi, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Phongsaphon Panyakum and Danai Ngiabphukhiaw, with only Sento Ito managing to stop him. It seems that those around him have realised that he’s decent enough to build up, and he’s won his last 6, albeit against poor opponents, coming into this and will have some confidence of scoring the most meaningful win of his career.

Mixfight Pattaya, Pattaya, Thailand
In a second show in The Land of Smiles we get much lower level action, but there are two interesting prospects on the card.

One of those is Thai based Cuban hopeful Daniel Rodriguez (4-1, 3), who looks to score his third win of 2025 as he takes on Atipbodee Srikao (6-9, 3). The 22 year old Cuban lost his second bout, to Kritsana Srisang, but has reeled off 3 wins since then and barely lost a round in those 3 bouts combined. Although very much a novice professional he has already faced 4 fighters with winning records and looks to be hungry to race through the Thai scene and move onto bigger and better things. As for Srikao he's been a professional for around 3 years and has had mixed success, including notable losses on the road to Kai Watanabe and Da Won Gang, as well as being stopped in his last 5 bouts. Notably he has fought as a lightweight whilst the Cuban is a Light Middleweight, suggesting this could be something of a quick blow out.

The other notable prospect is 21 year old Russian fighter Rakhman Babakishiev (2-0, 2)* who looks to continue his aggressive start as he takes on Thai local Kiattisak Thawisap (6-6, 4). In his first 3 bouts Babakishiev has needed just 3 rounds to stop his opponents, and the Russian Welterweight, who debuted in December, looks to be trying to stay busy and get things going as he moves on to bigger and better fights. His first two opponents were very poor, but this is a good step in the right direction and should tell us more than his first couple of foes. As for Thawisap, he has proven to be a glass cannon, with 9 of his first 12 bouts being stopped early, and an average of 3.25 rounds a fight. Sadly that has included losing his last 4 in a combined 10 rounds, with the most notable name to stop him being Shingo Wake, a career Super Bantamweight.

We also get a small but notable card in the Philippines, featuring a minor title fight and several interesting hopefuls.

The title bout will see Filipino fighter Rodel Wenceslao (22-19-2, 11) take on Thai fighter Atchariya Wirojanasunobol (15-5, 7), with the men facing off for the vacant WBF International Welterweight title. With 4 bouts to his name, the 31 year old Wenceslao is a genuine veteran, who made his debut back in 2011 during his career he has faced some notable fighters, such as Keita Obara, Hiroki Okada and All Rivera, but sadly come up short against the notable fighters. He’s much better than his record suggests, but his ceiling is no more than higher regional level. Wirojanasunobol on the other hand was a top Thai hopeful at one point, but an arrest for crimes related to drugs derailed his career and he's never really recovered going 3-5 since his arrest. At his best he was good, but nowadays he looks to be someone well past their best and like someone who has lost his desire to make a mark on the sport. Given how neither of these men are stars, or going places we’re actually interested in this bout which is something of a 50-50.

The once beaten April Jay Abne (15-1, 6) will be looking for his 9th straight win as he takes on fellow Filipino Anthony Gilbuela (8-7-2, 2). Abne is a real talent, who avenged his loss, and has and has since added notable wins against Christian Bacolod, Richard Claveras and Robert Paradero, though sadly this is his third bout in a row against a weaker opponent, and comes after he fought just once in 2024, losing a lot of the momentum he seemed to be building. Gilbuela is no push over, having only been stopped in 3 of his 7 losses, but is also not really much of a threat, with a lack of power, and just 1 win in his last 5 bouts. Abne should be facing better foes, but we’re glad he’s back in the ring and hopefully bigger and better bouts are just around the corner.

The card will also feature Angelus Pilapil (4-0, 2), who looks for win #5 against the hard hitting John Rey Labajo (4-2-1, 4), and Berland Robles (11-0-1, 4), who takes on the very light punching Anferne Palarca (5-6-1, 1).

Estadio Municipal Hector Gallucci, San Lorenzo
We actually get the most significant fight featuring an Asian taking place outside of the continent, as as once beaten Argentinian world champion Evelin Nazarena Bermudez (20-1-1, 7) defends her world titles against Japanese veteran Tenkai Tsunami (32-13-1, 19). Bermudez, enjoying her second reign as the WBO and IBF Light Flyweight champion, has bounced back well from her 2022 loss to Yokasta Valle, reeling off 3 wins, and will be looking to keep her momentum going with one of his biggest wins to date. As for Tsunami, the popular and fun to watch 40 year old is certainly coming to the end of her career, but is looking to become a world title for a third time, and end her career with one final run at the top.

Note - Babakishiev had a fight scheduled for March 2nd as well as March 8th, it would be his third bout, this however was written and scheduled prior to that first fight.

December 26th-New WBC World champion to be crowned on Boxing day!

The day after Christmas is called “boxing day” in some parts of the world, and this year we certainly have a boxing day fight to be excited about in Bangkok, as we’re set to see a new world champion being crowned.

The match up in question will see former WBC Minimumweight champion Panya Pradabsri (43-2, 27) look to become a 2-weight world champion as he takes on the criminally under-rated Carlos Canizales (27-2-1, 19) for the vacant WBC Light Flyweight title, with Canizales looking to end the year on a higher. The 33 year old Pradabsri is best known for his short but notable reign as the WBC Minimumweight champion. That reign began when he dethroned the then 54-0 Wanheng Menayothin, saw him record 4 defenses, including one over Wanheng and two over Norihito Tanaka, before losing the belt in Japan to Yudai Shigeoka. He has long been one of the best fighters at 105lbs, but also someone who seemed big at the weight and as if he was boiling down hard to mark 105lbs, as opposed to letting his body fight at a more natural weight of Light Flyweight or even Flyweight. As for Canizales, he is perhaps the best active fighter to have never won outright recognition as a "world" champion, having only held the WBA "regular" title when Hiroto Kyoguchi was the "Super" champion. He is legitimate world class, with the only marks on his record being a draw against Ryoichi Taguchi, and losses to Esteban Bermudez, in a 2021 Upset of the Year contender, and Kenshiro Teraji, in a razor thin bout in January of this year. Canizales is tough, heavy handed, highly skilled, has a great engine, applies constant pressure, and is a complete nightmare to fight. Unlike many fighters from Venezuela, who pad their record but come undone against fighters on their travels, Canizales has proven his skills on the road, not just with the bouts against Taguchi and Kenshiro, but also wins against Reiya Konishi, Lu Bin, Sho Kimura, Ganigan Lopez and Daniel Matellon.

Given the styles of the two men, who are both, strong, come to fight and like to enforce their wills, we are expecting a very, very special bout here, to give us a late Christmas treat.

We have a second show in Bangkok, albeit a much smaller one, at the Spaceplus Bangkok RCA.

One of the best match ups on the card will see unbeaten Filipino Arvin Jhon Paciones (9-0, 5) take on under-rated Chinese fighter Xiang Li (9-2-2, 4) in a scheduled 12 rounder. The 19 year old Paciones has had a pretty notable 18 months come into this, stopping Jonatan Refugio, taking a good 12 round win over Kitidech Hirunsuk and beating former world champion Rene Mark Cuarto. He is a real prospect, with skill, power, speed and a willingness to take tests, both at home and on the road. The 26 year old Li is no push over, with his losses coming to Miel Fajardo and Jonathan Almacen, with that one coming in the Philippines, and notable results against Raymond Poon KaiChing, who he beat in Hong Kong, and a Ryu Horikawa, who he fought to a 10 round draw This is a genuinely good match up, and the winner should be in the mix for a recognised regional title sooner rather than later.

Having just mentioned Raymond Poon KaiChing (10-3, 6) it’s worth noting he is on this card, as he takes on former world title challenger Komgrich Nantapech (37-13, 27). Nantapech was once a very solid fighter, who gave Donnie Nietes a competitive bout in 2017, and also gave a good account of himself, albeit in a wide loss, against Juan Carlos Reveco. Since however he has gone a very mixed 15-8. Whilst some of those losses are at a good level some aren’t and he has been stopped 5 times in his last 11, going 6-5 over those bouts, suggesting a fighter who has either taken too much punishment, or is happy to go down softly nowadays. As for KaiChing the 28 year old from Hong Kong is 3-2 in his last 5 and whilst he hasn’t scored a notable win, he will likely come into this seeing it as a huge chance to get a career best win.

Unbeaten American Jermaine Hardison (4-0, 3) looks to score his latest win, and claim a minor regional title, as he takes on Thai local Thuwanan Tumninlakan (4-2-1, 4). Hardison has required 14 rounds for his first 4 wins, and whilst the opposition hasn't been tough the 21 year old is getting on with things and, for the most part, seeing off his opponents the way he and his team would have been hoping. The 19 year old Tumninlakan however has been matched very softly, and failed to win other of his last 2 bouts, fighting to a draw with Supakorn Boonmak and a loss to Nattawut Kaewkhanchum. In fact he is 1-2-1 in his last 4, and it would be a real surprise to see him beat Hardison

Another unbeaten hopeful on this card is Matvei Lagerev (6-0, 5), a Thai based Russian, who will be expecting to pick up another win as he takes on Phatiphan Krungklang (20-9-1-1, 12). In just 15 rounds Lagerev has discord 6 wins, including one over forms world title challenger Pigmy Kokietgym, albeit a faded and undersized Pigmy. On paper Krungklang is a step up for the Russian, but in reality it's not a notably step up, especially when you realise Krungklang has been stopped in 8 of his 9 losses and his wins have come at a very poor level.

July 6th-Great Dynamic Glove show at Korakuen Hall!

This coming Saturday isn’t a huge one for boxing, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad one, and in fact it has one of the best looking Who’s Next Dynamic Glove cards of the year so far, with 4 excellent international match ups which should push the winners on to bigger and better bouts.

This coming Saturday isn’t a huge one for boxing, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad one, and in fact it has one of the best looking Who’s Next Dynamic Glove cards of the year so far, with 4 excellent international match ups which should push the winners on to bigger and better bouts.

The main event of the show will see former world title challenger Shokichi Iwata (12-1, 9) take on unbeaten Filipino Jahzeel Trinidad (11-0, 6), with both men knowing a win here could help set them up for a world title fight towards the end of the year. Iwata, who perhaps should have won the WBO Light Flyweight title in 2022 when he was unfortunate against Jonathan Gonzalez, has won his last 3, all against Filipino fighters, by stoppage, with a very notable win against Rene Mark Cuarto in that run. He’s proven to be an excellent boxer-puncher and someone who seems to have “future world champion” written all over him. Trinidad began his career fighting between Flyweight and Super Flyweight, and was 9-0 (4), but now appears to have settled at Light Flyweight, where he has stopped both Roslan Eco and Eldin Guinahon, to claim and defend the PBF Flyweight title. Although his record doesn't suggest he's a big puncher he has stopped his last 4 in a combined 8 rounds and will know if he can upset Iwata he will be very much in the mix for a world title fight.

The chief support bout is another Japan Vs Philippines bout, as the very highly regarded Subaru Murata (6-0, 6) risks his perfect KO streak to take on unbeaten Filipino Bryan James Wild (12-0-1, 6). Murata was an elite amateur who made his debut back in 2021, doing so in the US where he has fought 3 of his 6 bouts so far, and has been stepping up the level of competition with every fight so far, with a win over Alex Santisima Jr in March began his best so far. This is, on paper, the next step in that same direction while he also moves onwards towards a potential regional title fight. As for Wild the 23 year old Filipino hasn't been matched too softly, facing some of the more notable Filipino domestic level fighters in and around Super Bantamweight, including Carlo Demecillo, Jess Rhey Waminal and Ryan Rey Ponteras. Wild will be the first fellow southpaw that Murata will face, and it’ll be interesting to see how he copes with that, but Murata should have too much for the visitor.

A third bout matching a Japanese hopeful with a Filipino will see the unbeaten Kota Kaneko (5-0, 4) take on the hard hitting Michael Casama (9-2-1, 9). The 26 year old Kaneko looks to be a great fighter with a lot of potential, but also a lot of questions still to answer, and he's stepping up nicely here after seeing off Jhunrille Castino in March. He's quick, sharp, has a lovely jab, good footwork and solid power, but we've not really seen him being chin checked or facing any adversity. That could change here. Casama is a 23 year old Pinoy, who has proven to be incredibly dangerous early on, with 7 wins in the first 2 rounds. He has however stumbled in recent bouts, going 1-2-1 in his last 4, and been stopped twice, including his only previous bout outside of the Philippines, when he was stopped by Junya Shimada in September. If Kaneko can see off the early danger he should be able to move to 6-0 here.

Whilst 3 bouts are Japan Vs Philippines, there is a Japan Vs China bout, and this might be the pick of the bunch, as the fast rising Kyosuke Takami (6-0, 5) takes on former world title challenger Wulan Tuolehazi (15-6-2, 7). The talented 22 year old Takami, has looked a star in the making in recent bouts, with stellar wins over Lito Dante and Kenichi Horikawa in his last 2 bouts. He looks to be one of the genuine rising stars of Japanese boxing, with skills, power and speed, and we wouldn’t be surprised by him fighting for his first professional title later this year. As for Tuolehazi, the Chinese fighter, who is now 31, has lot his last 2, but has mixed as a high level, beating Jayr Raquinel and Ryota Yamauchi, earning a draw with Sho Kimura and coming up short against Kosei Tanaka, Taku Kuwahara and Olimjon Nazarov. Despite Tuolehazi’s experience he is seen as the under-dog here against someone who looks like a nailed on future world champion.

As well as the show in Japan there is also a show in Thailand, though a smaller, less interesting card than the one at Korakuen Hall.

One of the main bouts here will see former world title challenger Komgrich Nantapech (35-11, 25) look for his third win of the year, and bounce back from a loss to Jayr Raquinel, as he takes on limited novice Natthaphong Nuchaiyaphum (3-3, 3), who has won his last 2, but has lost every time he’s faced someone with some ambition and fight in them,

The other bout of note here will see unbeaten men clash, as Sangkaphong Chomyong (7-0) takes on Ammarit Yaodam (1-0). On paper this looks like a mismatch in favour of Chmyong, but in reality it’s one that neither man has done enough to really be favoured in and should be an interesting 6 rounder especially given the fact neither man has scored a stoppage in a combined 8 bouts. It’s a bout that looks like it could be interesting, but we don’t imagine it’ll be the most exciting.

August 19th-Unbeaten Thai hopefuls steps up

This coming Friday our attention turns to Thailand for an interesting card featuring two of the most promising Thai prospects, as well the ring of a former world title challenger, in what is very much a gimmie bout bout after more than a year out of the ring.

The main event is a genuine great one as unbeaten Thai hopeful Nattapong Jankaew (10-0, 6), one of the more naturally skilled Thai's out there, takes on under-rated Filipino Adrian Lerasan (11-4, 4). The bout will be for Jankaew's WBA Asia Super Flyweight title, which he will be looking to defend for the second time. The Thai has proven to be a truly skilled fighter with a lot promise, but someone who has, at times, not fully performed to his ability, and has gone through the motions at times, when really he should have been showing what he can do. If he looks to cruise here he could be in a lot of problems. On paper Lerasan is nothing special however he has won his last 4 by stoppage, including 3 wins in Thailand over much fancied prospects, stopping Tanes Ongjunta and Phongsaphon Panyakum, and he has already shown Thai hopefuls not to over-look him. This is a potential banana skin for Jankaew, who should win, but will have to take Lerasan seriously.

Another unbeaten hopeful on this card is the 20 year old Chaiyapong Phongwankittikun (6-0, 6) who will be stepping up massively, as he takes on veteran Aekkawee Kaewmanee (24-18, 12). The youngster is looking for his third win of the year, and is clearly making up for lost time having not fought at all in 2021, but to date his wins have come against very, very limited opponents, and he has taken them out early on, with no one lasting more than 4 rounds with him. Kaewmanee is a proper veteran, who has been around 2013, but he is now 40 and has lost 5 of his last 6. He's still racking in bouts, and this will be his 6 of the year, but he lacks any ambition and the real question is how long will be survive with the youngster

The former world title challenger on this card is Komgrich Nantapech (30-5, 21), aka Eaktwan BTU Ruaviking, who came up short against Donnie Nietes in 2017 and Juan Carlos Reveco that same year, but has reeled off an 8 fight winning runs since then. Sadly Komgrich has been out of the ring since March 2021, and rather than taking on someone testing he will be up against Thawi Chaisat (0-13), a very limited who has been stopped 13 times in just 32 rounds. Komgrich shouldn't break a sweat here, but sadly this is the 6th straight bout against a limited local foe, and we really hope he faces someone more meaningful next time out.
