December 31st 2013-Bodymaker Colosseum, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Kazuto Ioka (13-0, 9) vs Felix Alvarado (18-0, 15) Today Japan's Kazuto Ioka [井岡 一翔] holds a title at Flyweight, a division that saw him setting a record for the fewest fights to become a 3-weight champion. Prior to his move to 112lbs he had claimed a WBA Light Flyweight title. His last fight at 108lbs saw him take on Nicaraguan Felix Alvarado in what was one of the most enjoyable bouts of Ioka's career. December 31st 2015-EDION Arena Osaka, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Kazuto Ioka (18-1, 10) Vs Juan Carlos Reveco (36-2, 19) In 2015 we saw Kazuto Ioka twice battle Juan Carlos Reveco, the second of those bouts came at the end of the year and saw a very decisive result, unlike their very close first meeting, which was hotly disputed by fans of Reveco. (Video courtesy of wowmanzana) December 31st 2011-Prefectural Gymnasium, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Kazuto Ioka (8-0, 5) Vs Yodngoen Tor Chalermchai (8-0, 4) The December 31st shows in Japan have become a staple in the boxing calendar though it's worth remembering that they only really began in 2011. On that day TV Tokyo broadcast Takashi Uchiyama Vs Jorge Solis whilst rival channel TBS aired the first of Kazuto Ioka's New Years Eve bouts. This bout saw Ioka take on unbeaten Thai Yodngoen Tor Chalermchai in what looked a good match on paper for the then WBC Minimumweight champion. February 11th 2011-World Memorial Hall, Kobe, Hyogo, Japan Oleydong Sithsamerchai (35-0-1, 13) Vs Kazuto Ioka (6-0, 4) Today the Japanese boxing scene seems to be pushing out a new youngster every year with Naoya Inoue being followed by Kosei Tanaka and it seems that next up will be Hinata Maruta. A few years ago the man to watch was Kazuto Ioka who took a huge step up in class in his 7th pro bout as he faced Thailand's unbeaten Oleydong Sithsamerchai for the WBC Minimumweight title. In the west many though Kazunori and Hiroki Ioka were throwing their young charge to the proverbial wolves April 22nd 2015- Prefectural Gymnasium, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Kazuto Ioka (16-1, 10) Vs Juan Carlos Reveco (35-1, 19) For some boxing is all about the money. We have fighters trying to make as much of it as they can and we have fans talking about fighters making large swathes of it. For others however the sport is about legacy, how a fighter will be remembered, their achievements and their willingness to prove themselves against top level fighters. It's needless to say that for Kazuto Ioka legacy comes first. Back in 2011 he set the Japanese speed record for fewest to become a world champion and just 3 fights later he unified titles. Today he had his second shot to become the quickest man to become a 3-weight world champion, and in turn become just the second Japanese fighter to achieve the feat. In his way was Argentinian warrior Juan Carlos Reveco. With legacy on the line these two really put on a show together in what was a thoroughly brilliant bout from start to end. Earlier this year we saw Japan's Kazuto Ioka look lackluster against Thailand's Amnat Ruenroeng in an IBF Flyweight title fight. That fight was Ioka's debut at 112lbs and at times he looked too small, too weak and too patient to over-come the Thai fighter. This past Tuesday Ioka returned to the ring to fight in his second Flyweight bout as he took on tough Colombian Pablo Carrillo. We won't ruin the bout though we suspect that many fans will be interested by the performance, especially given the significant difference in size between the two men. |
