December 17th 1991-Prefectural Gymnasium, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Myung Woo Yuh (36-0, 14) Vs Hiroki Ioka (18-2-1, 9) When we talk about the great Light Flyweights of all time we seem to always mention two fantastic Korean fighters. One of them was Jung Koo Chang, the Korean Hawk who kept a vice like grip on the WBC title for much of the 1980's, and the other was long term WBA title holder Myung Woo Yuh. Yuh's reign saw him twice fight Japan's Hiroki Ioka, the uncle of current world champion Kazuto Ioka, and this was their first meeting in 1991.

December 31st 2011-Prefectural Gymnasium, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Kazuto Ioka (8-0, 5) Vs Yodngoen Tor Chalermchai (8-0, 4) The December 31st shows in Japan have become a staple in the boxing calendar though it's worth remembering that they only really began in 2011. On that day TV Tokyo broadcast Takashi Uchiyama Vs Jorge Solis whilst rival channel TBS aired the first of Kazuto Ioka's New Years Eve bouts. This bout saw Ioka take on unbeaten Thai Yodngoen Tor Chalermchai in what looked a good match on paper for the then WBC Minimumweight champion. February 11th 2011-World Memorial Hall, Kobe, Hyogo, Japan Oleydong Sithsamerchai (35-0-1, 13) Vs Kazuto Ioka (6-0, 4) Today the Japanese boxing scene seems to be pushing out a new youngster every year with Naoya Inoue being followed by Kosei Tanaka and it seems that next up will be Hinata Maruta. A few years ago the man to watch was Kazuto Ioka who took a huge step up in class in his 7th pro bout as he faced Thailand's unbeaten Oleydong Sithsamerchai for the WBC Minimumweight title. In the west many though Kazunori and Hiroki Ioka were throwing their young charge to the proverbial wolves November 3rd 2012-Xebio Arena, Sendai, Miyagi, Japan Shinsuke Yamanaka (16-0-2, 11) Vs Tomas Rojas (39-13-1, 26) Japanese Bantamweight sensation Shinsuke Yamanaka is regarded by many as one of the hard hitting fighters, pound-for-pound, on the planet. One man who felt the power of "God's Left" first hand was Mexican Tomas Rojas who challenged Yamanaka for the WBC title back in November 2012. December 31st 2011- Bunka Gym, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan Takashi Uchiyama (17-0, 14) Vs Jorge Solis (41-3-2, 30) A recent tradition in Japan is to have big boxing shows on New Years Eve. At the moment there are two men linked to those events. On TBS there is Osaka star Kazuto Ioka, who has been headlining Ioka events from the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium for the past few years, the other is Takashi Uchiyama who is a staple of the TV Tokyo shows. Uchiyama's first "NYE" bout saw him take on Jorge Solis in what was, at the time, regarded as Uchiyama's first serious defence. Note-Although Uchiyama beat Takashi Miura prior to this bout, Miura hadn't yet established himself as a force internationally and the win over Miura didn't get the respect it deserved until significantly after that bout. December 31st 2012-Ota-City General Gymnasium, Tokyo, Japan Takashi Uchiyama (18-0-1, 15) Vs Bryan Vazquez (29-0, 15) In many ways a win can become more, or less, valuable as time goes on. Back in 2012 WBA Super Featherweight champion Takashi Uchiyama was thought to have been facing a solid but unspectacular opponent from Costa Rica when he took on Bryan Vazquez, who was the WBA "interim" champion. As it turned out over the following few years Vazquez is certainly no mug and he has shown himself to be a credible fighter, which in retrospect makes Uchiyama's performance here all the more impressive. July 16th 2012-Winghat, Kasukabe, Saitama, Japan Takashi Uchiyama (18-0, 15) Vs Michael Farenas (34-3-3, 26) Japan's Takashi Uchiyama may be the Super Featherweight kingpin but there is a mark against his name, that came against Filipino tough Michael Farenas back in 2012. For those who missed that one we've managed to come across the full fight video here. Note- We know that this video has been made unavailable in more than 40 countries. We're sorry for any inconvenience with fans unable to watch the bout. We decided however that it was best that not everyone missed out, and we also know there are ways to work around the regional block on the viewers side. April 25th 2009-König Palast, Krefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany Koji Sato (14-0, 13) Vs Felix Sturm (31-2-1, 13) Japanese fighters have rarely had success above the 130lb weight class. That however hasn't stopped some fighters from trying, including Koji Sato who, in 2009, traveled to Germany to face the then WBA Middleweight champion Felix Sturm. Coming in to the bout Sato was unbeaten with a reputation as a puncher and a wild fighting style that had given Japanese fight fans some really exciting bouts. July 15th 2001-Okayama City, Okayama, Japan Tiger Ari (58-5-3, 25) Vs Kazunori Fujita (13-1, 8) In 2000 Tiger Ari successfully defended the OPBF Super Featherweight title against Kazunori Fujita, claiming a 12 round decision win. The following year then men faced off again with Ari's OPBF title on the line like it was in their first bout. Interestingly Fujita entered the bout as the OPBF interim champion, claiming that status after beating Gang Il Jo who fillied in for Ari when a rematch was supposed to take place in November 2000 May 17th 2010-Super Arena, Saitama, Saitama, Japan Takashi Uchiyama (14-0, 11) Vs Angel Granados (18-8, 8) At the start of 2010 Japan's Takashi Uchiyama scored a break out win, stopping Juan Carlos Salgado to claim the WBA Super Featherweight title. In his first defense Uchiyama took on the completely unknown Angel Granados in what was little more than the typical "easy first defense. |
