August 18th 1990-Civil Gymnasium, Incheon, South Korea Ki Joon Lee (14-0-1, 10) Vs Paul Banke (19-4, 10) Many modern day boxing fans will have missed out on the all action warriors that Korea produced in the 1970's 80's and 90's including Ki Joon Lee, who may not have been the most skilled fighter our there but was as gutsy as they came and never seemed to under-stand that defending himself was an acceptable tactic to use in a fight. The Korean's career lasted less than 5 years as a professional but during that time he fought 18 times with his most memorable bout being a tremendous bout with WBC Super Bantamweight champion Paul Banke. To call this a war really wouldn't do the fight justice, it was, at times, nothing short of breath taking. September 22nd 2015-Ota-City General Gymnasium, Tokyo, Japan Kenichi Ogawa (15-1, 13) Vs Deivi Julio Bassa (17-0, 10) Japan's heavy handed Kenichi Ogawa is one of a number of emerging Super Featherweights coming through the ranks in Japan at the moment. Earlier this week he was involved in his most notable bout to date, as he took on the world ranked Deivi Julio Bassa, an unbeaten Colombian who had traveled with a lot of confidence. June 1st 1980-Prefectural Gymnasium, Kochi, Kochi, Japan Yoko Gushiken (21-0, 14) Vs Martin Vargas (60-5-3, 29) On October 10th 1976 Yoko Gushiken, fighting for the 9th time as a professional, claimed the WBA Light Flyweight title by stopping Juan Antonio Guzman. Following that title win he was a whirlwind of activity and quickly ran up defense after defense. In his 12th defense he faced the experienced Martin Vegas as he looked to continue his excellent reign as the champion. January 24th 2009-Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Satoshi Hosono (13-0, 10) Vs Masaki Sawanaga (22-8-4, 8) There are a lot of fighters out there who spend their career being regarded as a contender in their division with out ever becoming a world champion. There is a growing feeling that that might be the case for Satoshi Hosono. The Japanese puncher is a multi-time world title challenger and one of the heaviest handed fighters on the Oriental scene. One of his Oriental title bouts saw him face off against fellow Japanese fighter Masaki Sawanaga. This bout came just 3 months after Hosono had claimed the Oriental title with a decision win against Makyo Sugita. December 23rd 2008-Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan Daisuke Naito (33-2-3, 21) Vs Shingo Yamaguchi (23-5-2, 9) It's often said that the smaller fighters age quicker than those at the heavier weights, it seemed however that no one told Daisuke Naito who enjoyed his most notable professional success in his 30's. It was at 32 years old that he claimed his first world title, finally over-coming Pongsaklek Wonjongkam in what was their third meeting and he was 34 when he got around to facing Shingo Yamaguchi, who was 29 and taking part in his 3rd world title bout. Note-This video features a hefty amount of build up and the fight doesn't begin until about 20:30 December 31st 2008-Sun Plaza Hall, Hiroshima, Hiroshima, Japan Takefumi Sakata (33-4, 15) Vs Denkaosan Kaovichit (45-1-1, 19) II It's fair to say that 2007 was a memorable year in the career of Japanese Takefumi Sakata. The Japanese fighter finally claimed a world title, stopping Lorenzo Parra in what was their 3rd meeting, avenging a couple of close defeats, avenging a loss to Roberto Vasquez and fighting to a draw with Denkaosan Kaovichit. At the end of the following year he faced Kaovichit in a rematch. Coming in to this one Sakata was hoping to record the 5th defense of his title. January 3rd 2009-Pacifico, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan Yusuke Kobori (23-2-1, 12) Vs Paulus Moses (23-0, 17) In mid 2008 Yusuke Kobori won the WBA Lightweight title by stopping Jose Alfaro in a slugfest. In his first defense, some 8 months later, Kobori took on unbeaten Namibian Paulus Moses. May 19th 2008-Differ Ariake, Tokyo, Japan Yusuke Kobori (22-2-1, 11) v Jose Alfaro (20-3-0-1, 18) In December 2007 Nicaraguan banger Jose Alfaro claimed the WBA Lightweight title with a split decision win over Thailand's Prawet Singwancha. In his first defense Alfaro traveled to Japan and faced Japanese champion Yusuke Kobori. This bout may not be remembered by many but it was certainly an entertaining brawl with bombs being thrown from the off. Whilst this bout is often forgotten it is interesting to look through the records of both men. Alfaro had suffered losses to the then unknown pairing of Cesar Rene Cuenca and Miguel Acosta, both of whom would go on to claim world titles whilst Kobori had scored a win over a then unbeaten Takashi Miura, who also went on to claim a world title. November 18th 1992-Prefectural Gymnasium, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Myung Woo Yuh (36-1, 14) Vs Hiroki Ioka (21-2-1, 9) In 1991 Korean great Myung Woo Yuh suffered his professional defeat, courtesy of a razor thin decision to Hiroki Ioka. Around 11 months after their first meeting they fought for a second time with Yuh looking to avenge his sole defeat and reclaim the WBA Light Flyweight title, a belt he had defended a remarkable 17 times prior to facing Ioka. |
