July 17th 2015- Iyara Market, Klongluang, Pathum Thani, Thailand Suriyan Sor Rungvisai (43-6-1, 21) Vs Ibuki Tanaka (0-1) Thailand's Suriyan Sor Rungvisai looks likely to be heading towards a second Bantamweight world title fight in the near future. Recently the talented Thai stayed busy by facing the tall and rangy Ibuki Tanaka. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) June 10th-Khon Kaen, Thailand Suriyan Sor Rungvisai (40-6-1, 20) Vs Jomar Fajardo (14-7-2, 7) Last year we saw Jomar Fajardo surprisingly fight to a draw with Francisco Rodriguez Jr. The result ended Rodriguez's, other strong, claim to be a contender for the Fighter of the Year, and helped take Fajardo from unknown to exciting slugger. Earlier today Thai fans saw Fajardo in the ring against former Super Flyweight title holder, and leading Bantamweight contender, Suriyan Sor Rungvisai. On paper it was mismatch based on size alone. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) May 28th 2015- Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand Suriyan Sor Rungvisai (41-6-1, 19) Vs Khunsuk Chaiyonggym* (?-?) When it comes to Thai's that we love watching Suriyan Sor Rungvisai is one of the fighters near the very top. Recently he was in action again, for what is believed to have been his 49th professional bout. *We believe the fighter facing Suriyan was Khunsuk Chaiyonggym though it may well be someone very different. If it was Khunsuk then we're at a loss as to his record. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) April 28th 2015- Thailand Suriyan Sor Rungvisai (40-6-1, 18) Vs Yodpichai Sithsaithong (10-12, 4) World class Thai Suriyan Sor Rungvisai continued his busy level of activity this past Tuesday as he took on fellow Thai Yodpichai Sithsaithong in a bout that looked like a total mismatch from the second it was announced. Whilst no one expected an upset it was Suriyan's third bout of 2015 and it's clear that he's remaining as active as he can until he gets another major bout, hopefully later in the year. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) February 24th 2015- Municipality of Klong 6, Klongluang District, Pathum Thani, Thailand Suriyan Sor Rungvisai (39-6-1, 18) Vs Samuel Tehuayo (18-32-2, 3) II We often bemoan about the quality of match ups in Thailand but one thing we can't complain about is the activity of the guys who make their name there. It was just 4 months ago that Suriyan Sor Rungvisai lost in a world title challenger to Shinsuke Yamanaka, since then he has fought 3 times with the most recent coming earlier this week when he had a rematch with tough Indonesian Samuel Tehuayo, AKA Sammy Hagler. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) January 23rd 2015- NCO Club, Royal Thai Airforce, Bangkok, Thailand Suriyan Sor Rungvisai (38-6-1, 17) Vs Daoden Sithsaithong (0-0) It's hard to believe that it was only around 3 months ago that we saw Suriyan Sor Rungvisai in a WBC Bantamweight world title bout against Shinsuke Yamanaka yet we've already seen him in action twice since then. The first of those bouts saw Suriyan destroy Tony Arema in November whilst the second is this bout, against the debuting Daoden Sithsaithong. (Video courtesy of our friends at www.tko.in.th) December 19th 2014- Kinpoo Seafood Restaurant, Samut Prakan, Thailand Suriyan Sor Rungvisai (37-6-1, 16) vs Tony Arema (3-5-1) In October we saw Suriyan Sor Rungvisai challenge WBC Bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka. Although he was dropped 3 times in that bout Suriyan managed to keep things relatively competitive and proved that he would be a nightmare for anyone in the division. Despite the effort against Yamanaka it was only 8 weeks until Suriyan was back in the ring as he took on the limited Tony Arema in a bout for the WBC Asian Boxing Council Bantamweight title. (Video courtesy of ทีเคโอ มวยโลก) World title bouts can vary massively in their quality and range from opening round blow outs in complete mismatches to very competitive 12 round battles between similarly talented fighters. The recent WBC Bantamweight title fight between Japan's Shinsuke Yamanaka and Thailand's Suriyan Sor Rungvisai, the mandatory challenger to the title. We won't ruin the bout, for those who haven't seen it, but it did turn out to be a very good contest with a lovely clash of styles, a determined challenger and a competent champion. The bout may not have been action packed or a FOTY contender but it was a very contest and one we thoroughly enjoyed, we hope you do to! (Video courtesy of ทีเคโอ มวยโลก) Thailand's Suriyan Sor Rungvisai isn't a puncher but he does have the skills, experience and shot selection to hurt fighters and on the rare occasions where he does want to close the show he can do just that. That was clearly the case in 2013 when he took on the then unbeaten Daryl Basadre of the Philippines. The bout looked interesting on paper but was a mismatch in the ring with Basadre simply not being ready for a fighter as talented and experienced as Suriyan. This resulted in Suriyan picking up a stoppage with a vicious body shot that cut short Basadre's unbeaten record without too many problems. Since this fight Basadre has strung together 4 wins whilst Suriyan has marched towards a WBC Bantamweight world title bout with Shinsuke Yamanaka. |
