At the moment we tend to feel that the strongest division in Japan is possibly the Super Featherweight division. The country has two world champions in the form of Takashi Uchiayama, the WBA champion, and Takashi Miura, the WBC champion, as well as top contenders like Daiki Kaneko, Masayuki Ito, Masao Nakamura and Rikki Naito. Amazingly however it's not just Japan pouring at some fantastic guys at 130lbs but also the Philippines. At the moment the top Filipino at 130lbs is Michael Farenas though not too far behind him is the tough and criminally under-rated Adones Aguelo who appears to be one of the divisions dark horses due to a misleading number of losses. Sadly for Aguelo a number of his losses have been very close making his record even more misleading. One of the most impressive performances from Aguelo saw him travel to Mexico and take on the colourful Nery Saguilan. Although the bout was widely viewed as a mismatch Aguelo gave as good as he got in a stirring performance that saw him invited back to Mexico a few months later to fight Sergio Thompson. We're not going to pretend that Aguelo is a world beater but he is a fighter who's record doesn't come close to telling the whole story and if you've not seen much of him we would advise keeping a close eye on him over the next few years.
