February 7th 2015- University of SouthEastern Philippines Gym, Barrio Obrero, Davao City, Davao del Sur, Philippines Mark Magsayo (9-0, 7) vs Sukkasem Kietyongyuth (13-3, 8) Filipino prospect Mark Magsayo caught our eye very early in his career and has repeatedly impressed us despite still only being a teenager. For his first 9 bouts however he was facing weak opponents who were there to make him look like a star in the making. In his 10th bout Magsayo stepped up, big time, and took on Thailand's very capable Sukkasem Kietyongyuth. It was a huge step up for Magsayo and for the first time we were going to see him having to answer questions about his ability.

May 1st 2006- 11th Inf Reg, Bangkok, Thailand Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (60-2, 30) vs Daigo Nakahiro (13-1, 4) Thailand's Pongsaklek Wonjongkam is one of the last great Thai's and his career really did bridge an era. The Thai was at the top for more than a decade and was one of the most dominant title holders in recent memory. In his 14th defence of the WBC Flyweight world title title Wonjongkam took on Daigo Nakahiro, who had lost just once, a split decision in a Japanese title fight against Daisuke Naito less than 3 months earlier. May 29th 2009- Bangla Stadium , Patong, Phuket, Thailand Oleydong Sithsamerchai (30-0, 12) Vs Muhammad Rachman (62-7-5, 32) Boxing is full of talented fighters who we seem to think are less talented than they are. Two such fighters are Oleydong Sithsamerchai and Muhammad Rachman. These two men fought back in 2009 when Oleydong was the WBC Minimumweight champion and unbeaten fighter making his 3rd world title defence which Rachman was viewed as a as a man who had seen better days following losses to Florante Condes and Milan Melindo in 2 of his previous 3 bouts. (Note-Sound quality here is poor at times, we're very sorry about that) July 30th 2011- Indosiar Studio, Jakarta, Indonesia Muhammad Rachman (63-10-5, 33) Vs Pornsawan Porpramook (22-3-1, 16) In April 2011 Muhammad Rachman became the oldest Minimumweight world champion in history as he shocked Kwanthai Sithmorseng to claim the WBA title aged 39. In his first defence of that title Rachman battled against another Thai, the always exciting Pornsawan Porpramook in what turned out to be a genuinely riveting contest that helped put Pornsawan on the boxing map and proved that Rachman was still among the top in the Minimumweight division. September 10th 2010- MSU IIT Gym, Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, Philippines Denver Cuello (23-4-6, 13) Vs Muhammad Rachman (62-8-5, 32) The Minimumweight division has often been one of the sports most over-looked and most over ignored divisions. That is despite the fact it's had some wonderfully exciting fighters in it, including the brilliant Denver Cuello tends to live up to his nickname of "The Excitement". In one of his most notable bouts Cuello battled against Indonesian veteran Muhammad Rachman in a major bout for both men, with Rachman needing a win to keep his career alive following 3 losses in his previous 4 bouts whilst Cuello needed a big to make the world take note. [Note-We apologise for the poor quality of this video] March 7th 1978- Tokyo, Japan Bernabe Villacampo (37-16-4, 24) Vs Shigeo Nakajima (8-0-1, 5) In recent years we've seen Japanese fighters get fast tracked to the top with alarming success. That however hasn't always been the case and sometimes it has back fired spectacularly. Back in the 1970's Shigeo Nakajima was hoping to be fast tracked and in just his 10th bout he took on Filipino puncher Bernabe Villecampo a dangerous 3-time world title challenger and then then GAB Flyweight champion. (Video courtesy of Jerome Naldoza) July 7th 1983- Kinki University Auditorium, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Hidekazu Akai (14-0, 13) Vs Bruce Curry (32-7, 16) Japan's hard hitting Hidekazu Akai has become a forgotten man in boxing though he was, at one time, a world title challenger who took on the then WBC 140lb champion Bruce Curry, the brother of the once sensational Don Curry. February 6th 2015- Rattanakosin Sompot Lad Krabang School , Bangkok, Thailand Dennapa Kiatniwat (2-0, 1) Vs Yodpichai Sor Visetkit (1-1) One of the many unbeaten Thai fighters looking to make a name for himself is Dennapa Kiatniwat who took to the ring for the third time when he took on Yodpichai Sor Visetkit in a typical Thai under-card bout. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) June 27th 2014- Ayuthaya Night Bazzar, Ayutthaya, Thailand Wanheng Menayothin (34-0, 11) vs Samuel Tehuayo (18-24-2, 3) II Current WBC Minimumweight champion Wanheng Menayothin hasn't been a champion long but his career has been a long one which has seen him fight against a lot of poor opposition, including a couple of bouts with Samuel Tehuayo, AKA Sammy Hagler. The second Hagler bout came just last year in what was Wanheng's 35th professional bout and his final warm up before finally stepping up to world class for the first time. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) November 11th 2011- Thabo, Nong Khai, Thailand Wanheng Menayothin (18-0, 5) Vs Crison Omayao (13-2-1, 4) In recent years we've seen Crison Omayao travel over to Japan to take on their top prospects such as Naoya Inoue and Kosei Tanaka and most recently, Genki Hanai. Prior to those bouts Omayao had shown some genuine promise, as shown back in 2011 when he took on the rising Thai Wanheng Menayothin and managed to be very competitive against the talented Thai who has since gone on to claim the WBC Minimumweight title. *Note-It appears Wanheng fought under the Kaiyanghadaogym banner for this bout (Video courtesy of Thairec.com) |
