March 16th 2024-Swiss Grand Hotel, Seoul Ha Nok Shim (8-2, 3) vs Bhinder Singh (1-1) Just over a week ago Korean fight fans in Seoul saw local fighter Ha Nok Shim [심하녹] take on Indian visitor Bhinder Singh, who was fighting outside of Indian for the first time. Rather interestingly Singh's previous fights had been at Light Welterweight, whilst this bout was taking place at just over the Super Featherweight limit, with Singh coming in more than 6lbs lighter than he had for his previous fight. As for Shim this was his first bout since being stopped by Mongolian hopeful Kharkhuu Enkhamar, in a Featherweight bout in January. July 1st 2023-University Gym, Bucheon In Duck Seo (14-3-2, 8) vs Xian Hai Zhang (8-11, 3) Once regarded as a genuine hopeful of south Korean boxing In Duck Seo [서인덕] has seen his standing in the sport fall somewhat in the last few years, with successive losses to Khusniddin Pulatov and Youli Dong. In July 2023 he had his 20th professional bout, which saw him take on Chinese fighter Xian Hai Zhang [张贤海] in a 6 rounder in Bucheon, South Korea. November 26th 2023-Yongsan Culture Center, Seoul Jong Seon Kang (17-1-2, 9) vs Kyohei Tonomoto (14-3-1, 7) Back in November 2023 fight fans in Seoul got a genuine treat as one of the brightest hopefuls in Korea, 22 year old Jong Seon Kang [강종선], looked to make his first defense of the OPBF Silver Featherweight title. In the opposite corner to the Korean youngster was Japanese challenger Kyohei Tonomoto [殿本恭平]. The bout, which was shown thanks to MBC Sports + was a very credible first defense for one of Korea's few shining hopefuls, and it was also a very entertaining, brutal and bloody clash between men who's styles gelled wonderfully to give us a memorable and action packed battle. July 1st 2023-University Gym, Bucheon Milan Melindo (39-5, 14) vs Jong Seon Kang (16-1-2, 9) In the summer of 2023 Korean hopeful Jong Seon Kang [강종선] took a notable step up in class, as he took on former unified Light Flyweight champion Milan Melindo, in a clash for the OPBF Silver Featherweight title. For Melindo the bout was his first defense of the title, and whilst he was certainly no natural at 126lbs, he had clearly been draining himself far too much to continue at 108lbs, where he had made a genuine name for himself and faced a who's who of the division. Despite being the bigger man Kang was the much less experienced and had lost just 2 fights earlier to to a different Filipino foe, in the form of Lienard Sarcon, and he likely wanted some revenge for that defeat to Melindo's countryman. July 1st 2023-University Gym, Bucheon Keon Kim (3-1-1) vs QuBu Ding (4-0, 1) In the summer of 2023 promising Korean teenager Keon Kim [김건] faced off with unbeaten Chinese fighter Qubu Ding [丁取布], with the two men clashing in a 6 rounder at Flyweight in Bucehon. On paper this was an easy one to over-look, but Kim, being touted as a prospect, deserved some attention and Ding certainly didn't travel to just lose his unbeaten record. This resulted in a really hotly contested bout, albeit one that was, at times, sloppy as the inexperience of both men showed through. March 16th 2024-Swiss Grand Hotel, Seoul Dong Hoon Jang (6-0, 2) vs Aminul Islam (5-3, 3) Last weekend we saw the unbeaten Dong Hoon Jang face off with Bangladeshi fighter Aminukl Islam in Seoul. The talented 25 year old Jang is slowly making waves in South Korea, and it seems like he could be one of the big winners of the rising in Korean boxing that we appear to be seeing post-pandemic. As for Islam, he had never been stopped coming in to this bout, but had never fought outside of Bangladesh prior to this bout. |
