One of the biggest shocks of 2014 came when a little known Filipino called Rey Loreto iced South African Nkosinathi Joyi in 3 rounds. For many that bout is still the upset of the year. We did however have an inkling that upset was possible having seen Rey Loreto in action just a few months earlier when he defeated Thailand's Pornsawan Porpramook and achieved one of the rarest feats in boxing, he won a bout as a visiting fighter in Thailand! Heading into this bout Loreto was seen as an easy touch for Pornsawan. The Filipino had a poor record of 16 wins and 13 losses from 29 fights though what was over-looked was the fact that he was a hungry fighter who was maturing and becoming a real handful, just as Pornsawan, a former world champion, found out. The only shameful thing about this bout was the judging which some how made out the bout was close and Loreto only ended up taking a majority technical decision in bout that he really dominated and genuinely impressed in. Although Loreto has only fought once since this contest, the Joyi fight, we are really looking forward to seeing him again and hopefully he'll fight sooner rather than later as he the potential to be a very good fighter.
