A recent Boxer Vs Slugger bout saw Filipino fighter Milan Melindo challenge IBF champion Javier Mendoza.

Not every fighter is blessed with power and no-one would ever describe Milan Melindo as a puncher though he does have a number of relatively early stoppages, including one over former 3-time Korean national champion Jin Man Jeon in what was a pretty fun to watch fight between two guys who aren't big punchers. The fight started with a good opening round that saw both men landing some solid shots. In round 2 however an incredible combination from Melindo sent the Korean down in agony with an apparent eye injury. The injury was so bad that Jeon stayed down for the 10 count before getting medical attention and congratulating Melindo on the win. Since this fight Melindo has become a fixture in the world rankings and, although he lost to Juan Francisco Estrada, we'd expect to see him fighting in several world title fights in coming years. Jeon, although not a major name, has, prior to this fight, fought Hirofumi Mukai, as mentioned in commentary, Takefumi Sakata and interestingly held a notable win over Suriyan Sor Rungvisai Filipino boxing is in a very interesting state at the moment with serious questions about just how long their top fighters, such as Manny Pacquiao, have left in the sport. Thankfully below those top fighters are a lot of very promising fighters, most notably from the ALA Gym which is easily the most promising and well funded gym in the country. Amongst those those promising fighters is Flyweight hopeful Milan Melindo, a fighter who appears likely to be a fixture on the world stage over the next 5 or 6 years. Melindo is a very skilled fighter with solid speed and a methodical mindset inside the ring. Despite the his skills he isn't a fighter who boasts much in the terms of power. Despite the lack of power he has scored some very nice stoppages including this one against Rosendo Vega which came courtesy of some lovely crisp punching and 2 knockdowns, the first of which was genuinely spectacular. Since this fight Melindo has come up short in a world title fight, losing to the brilliant Juan Francisco Estrada though we'd be genuinely amazed if he doesn't get multiple chances in the coming years given his resume and willingness to fight some very good fighters. |
