A year ago Kohei Oba was the Japanese Bantamweight champion, he was world ranked and at just 28 years old it seemed like he had plenty of time left in his career. Today he is a man looking back on his career having announced his retirement following a less than stellar win in his 40th professional contest. This contest saw Oba fighting domestic rival Keigo Soma, the bout was supposed to be an easy comeback following a stoppage loss to Randy Caballero last time out. Instead we saw Oba struggle, it was as if the loss to Caballero had taken more from him than just his hopes of being a world champion. Things were worsened by the fact Soma came to win and took the fight straight to "The Mayweather of Nagoya". It was as if Soma could smell blood and went for what would have been the biggest win of his career. Although we know we've ruined the result the bout is well worth watching, especially if you saw the Mayweather/Maidana rematch and had hoped for something more exciting. Oba is a budget version of Mayweather who uses the shoulder roll whilst Soma did what Maidana did in the first meeting. It's certainly an interesting contest even if the level of the men involved wasn't particularly high. (Video courtesy of aka0113)
