August 14th 2010-Auditorio Luis Estrada Medina, Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico Donnie Nietes (26-1-3, 15) Vs Mario Rodriguez (10-5-3, 7) It seems like an eternity ago but there was once a time when Donnie Nietes wasn't a Light Flyweight, that was when he was a Minimumweight. His last Minimumweight title bout came in August 2010 when he, as the WBO champion, travelled to Mexico to face Mario Rodriguez, who would later claim the IBF title with a huge upset over Nkosinathi Joyi. October 8th 2011-University of St. La Salle Coliseum, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines Donnie Nietes (28-1-3, 16) Vs Ramon Garcia Hirales (16-2-1, 9) In 2011 fans Filipino saw Donnie Nietes make a move to Light Flyweight and challenge the then WBO champion Ramon Garcia Hirales. May 10th 2014-SM Mall of Asia Arena Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines Donnie Nietes (32-1-4, 18) Vs Moises Fuentes (19-1-1, 10) II Over the last few weeks we've seen the WBO order a third bout between Donnie Nietes and Moises Fuentes, for those who have missed their rivalry the second bout, and the one that was rather conclusive, is here in full. (Note-The fight begins at around 57:31, prior to that the video shows the under-card bout between Milan Melindo and Martin Tecuapetla) July 11th 2015- Cebu City Waterfront Hotel & Casino, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines Donnie Nietes (35-1-4, 21) Vs Francisco Rodriguez Jr (17-2-1, 11) Filipino boxing has been dominated by a trio of champions over the last decade. Internationally the most notable have been Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire, back home however it's been Donnie Nietes holding the fort with a long reign as a champion in the lower weights. This past Saturday "Ahas" as looking to extend his WBO Light Flyweight reign as he took on former unified Minimumweight champion Francisco Rodriguez Jr. Filipino fighter Donnie Nietes may not get the acclaim that some other Filipino fighters get but he is just as good as any of them and his long reign as a world champion has proven that as he's proven to be one of the best little men in the sport. He again showed off his ability this past weekend as he took on Mexico's Carlos Velarde in a WBO Light Flyweight world title defense. We won't try and pretend this was one of the best fights of the year, it really wasn't, but for fans of top tier fighters it's hard to ignore just how talented Nietes. Here we saw him step up through the gears wonderfully and as soon as he began doing that he looked in a completely different level to his Mexican challenger. Sadly it did often seem like Velarde was so out of his depth that Nietes never really had to push himself. |
