In the past we have suggested that winning a fight in Thailand as the visitor is amongst the most difficult things a fighter can do. That's partly down the conditions they fight in in Thailand which sees fighters competing in the middle of the day in an temporary outdoor ring and it's also partly due to the home town officiating which can make the officials in Britain and the UK seem completely acceptable. One fighter who sadly found out how hard it is to win in Thailand was unbeaten Filipino Ben Mananquil who scored a 2nd round technical draw with Kwanpichit OnesongChaigym, then fighting under the name of Kwanpichit 13 Rien Express. Mananquil came into the bout a total unknown with 9 wins against limited Filipino domestic fighters whilst Kwanpichit entered as a world ranked contender and WBO Oriental champion. Despite entering as unknown Mananquil left as a danger man who had come incredibly close to scoring an opening round TKO before a clash of heads bailed out Kwanpichit. We'd happily suggest that a referee in almost any other country would have waved this off inside the first round when the Thai was eating solid, clean shots. Despite not coming away with the win Mananquil certainly showed that he was a capable fighter and may well be a hidden gem amongst the current generation of Filipino fighters.
