April 15th 1985-Pohang Indoor Gymnasium, Pohang, South Korea Soon Chun Kwon (25-3-2, 16) vs Shinobu Kawashima (4-0, 2) In 1983 Soon Chun Kwon [권순천] became the first IBF Flyweight champion, stopping Rene Busayong for the belt in Seoul. In his 5th defense he took on unbeaten Japanese teenager Shinobu Kawashima [川島 志伸], fighting for just the 5th time as a professional.

December 24th 1983-Seoul, South Korea Soon Chun Kwon (21-3-1, 14) Vs Rene Busayong (12-9, 4) On Christmas eve 1984 we got the inaugural IBF Flyweight title bout. That bout saw Korean fighter Soon Chun Kwon [권순천] take on Filipino Rene Busayong in Seoul. June 27th 1981-Kudok Gymnasium, Busan, South Korea Soon Chun Kwon (8-2, 5) vs Frankie Granados (12-36-3, 2) In 1981 a then novice Soon Chun Kwon [권순천], who would later win the IBF Flyweight title, faced off with veteran Frankie Granados in Busan. This was Kwon's first bout following a DQ loss against Yoshiyuki Uchikoshi just 2 months earlier and was his 3rd of 7 bouts in 1981! March 12th 1983-Masan, South Korea Soon Chun Kwon (18-2-1, 11) vs Rene Aroy (4-0, 4) In 1983 future IBF Flyweight champion Soon Chun Kwon [권순천] fought 6 times. One of those bouts saw him take on Filipino foe Rene Aroy in Masan. Later in 1983 year Kwon went on to challenge Jiro Watanabe for the WBA Super Flyweight title and became the first ever IBF Flyweight champion. July 17th 1985-Masan Gymnasium, Masan, South Korea Jong Kwan Chung (12-8-3, 3) vs Soon Chun Kwon (26-3-2, 17) II In January 1985 Jong Kwan Chung [정종관] challenged IBF Flyweight champion Soon Chun Kwon [권순천]. The two had a rematch in July that year, and then actually went on to have a third clash. This is their second meeting, that came just a few months after their first clash. December 20th 1985-Kudok Gymnasium, Busan, South Korea Jong Kwan Chung (12-8-4, 3) vs Soon Chun Kwon (26-3-3, 17) III In 1985 Jong Kwan Chung [정종관] and Soon Chun Kwon [권순천] clashed 3 times, for the IBF Flyweight title. Their first two bouts ended in draws, with the men looking to avoid a third even bout. (Video originally uploaded by rayrobinson333) July 24th 1983-Gwangju City, South Korea Soon Chun Kwon (20-2-1, 13) vs Ruben De La Cruz (2-0) In October 1983 Korean fighter Soon Chun Kwon [권순천] faced WBA Super Flyweight champion Jiro Watanabe. In his fight prior to that contest the Korea battled Filipino Ruben De La Cruz, who was beginning his career but would later go on to be a notable Filipino journeyman through of the 1980's and early 1990's. May 17th 1987-Kudok Gymnasium, Busan, South Korea Tae Il Chang (21-2-1, 9) vs Soon Chun Kwon (27-4-3, 18) In 1987 Korean fans saw Tae Il Chang [장태일] battle against Soon Chun Kwon [권순천] for the IBF Super Flyweight title, which had been vacated by Elly Pical with the Indonesian chasing the WBA title, held by Khaosai Galaxy. December 24th 1983-Seoul, South Korea Soon Chun Kwon (21-3-1, 14) Vs Rene Busayong (12-9, 4) On Christmas eve 1984 the IBF held their first Flyweight title bout and it pitted Korean Soon Chun Kwon [권순천], a former OPBF Super Flyweight champion, against Filipino Rene Busayong. Interestingly prior to this bout Kwon had challenged Super Flyweight great Jiro Watanabe, losing in a WBA Super Flyweight title bout. October 6th 1983-Prefectural Gymnasium, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Jiro Watanabe (19-1, 13) vs Soon-Chun Kwon (21-2-1, 14) In 1983 the then WBA Super Flyweight champion Jiro Watanabe [渡辺二郎] took on Korean Soon-Chun Kwon [권순천] in what was Watanabe's 5th defense of the title. Kwon would later make a name for himself as a key Flyweight of the 1980's. |
