In their first bout Takehara stopped Yokozaki in 10 rounds, very early in his career, whilst in this bout Takehara entered the Japanese Middleweight champion and was seeking his 4th defense of that national title.

June 24th 1996-Arena, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan Shinji Takehara (24-0, 18) vs William Joppy (21-0-1, 17) In Decemeber 1995 Shinji Takehara [竹原慎二] secured a place in history, becoming the first Japanese fighter to win a world title. In his first defense he battled American William Joppy.
