November 12th 1994-University Stadium, Khon Kaen, Thailand Ratanapol Sor Vorapin (19-2-1, 14) vs Carlos Alberto Rodriguez (18-7, 16) Thailand's Ratanapol Sor Vorapin [รัตนพล ส.วรพิน] was one of the most notable Minimumweights of the 1990's racking up a host of defenses of the IBF title. One of those defenses saw him face off against Carlos Alberto Rodriguez. May 14th 1994-Sara Buri, Thailand Ratanapol Sor Vorapin (17-2-1, 12) vs Roger Espanola (12-5-1, 8) In his 6th defense of the IBF Minimumweight title Ratanapol Sor Vorapin [รัตนพล ส.วรพิน] took on Filipino Roger Espanola, in what was a rare all-teen world title bout. September 26th 1993-Hua Mark Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand Ratanapol Sor Vorapin (14-2-1, 10) v Domingus Siwalette (0-0) Thailand's Ratanapol Sor Vorapin [รัตนพล ส.วรพิน] made a lot of defenses of the IBF Minimumweight title back in the 1990's. One of the most peculiar was his defense against Domingus Siwalette, who appears to have had no professional bouts before this contest, and subsequently went on to lose 9 recorded bouts. In fact his career record of 0-10 may be the very worst of any world title challenger. We do need to note however that Indonesian records are notoriously incomplete and it does seem that Siwalette was an Indonesian. February 27th 1994-Phichit, Thailand Ratanapol Sor Vorapin (16-2-1, 12) vs Ronnie Magramo (19-6, 14) In the early 1990's Thailand's Ratanapol Sor Vorapin [รัตนพล ส.วรพิน] began a memorable reign as the IBF Minimumweight champion. One of the many defenses saw Ratanapol face off against Ronnie Magramo. When we talk about all time greats it's hard to avoid a conversation mentioning Mexican legend Ricardo Lopez. Sadly for Asian fighters Lopez seemed to make a habit out of beating them, and making it look easy. One of those he dominated was Thailand's Ratanpol Sor Vorapin, who never came close to even testing the Mexican sensation before being stopped in just 3 rounds. This was Lopez's first defense of the IBF Light Flyweight title and his penultimate bout and even though his career was coming to an end he still looked like a phenomenal fighter with perfect timing, control of distance, sensational punch selection, and all the tools that any fighter wishes they could have. In some ways you have to feel sorry for the opposition that Lopez faced whilst in another way you have to just appreciate one of the sports greatest fighters. When we talk about great bouts we know some slip through the radar and one such bout was the 1994 FOTY contender between Ratanapol Sor Vorapin, the thunderously hard hitting Thai southpaw, and Venezuelan banger Marcelino Bolivar. Going into the bout Ratanapol was the IBF Minimumweight champion and had already made 6 defences of his belt. He entered with a very good record of of 18-2-1 (13) and had won his previous 11 bouts. Bolivar was a former 2-time Olympian who had won an Olympic bronze in 1984 and had compiled an excellent record of 17-3 (16). Both were serious punchers and it showed. We won't ruin what happens in the bout but it really is an amazing contest and well worth your time. (Video courtesy of rayrobinson333) |
