The Rookie of the Year competition is one of the more exciting but peculiar aspects of Japanese boxing. Unlike most other countries where novices seem to be categorised as "prospects", "journeymen" or "ticket sells" novices in Japan can be described simply as a "rookie" and enter the "rookie of the year" competition. For many winning the All Japan Rookie of the Year is a huge stepping stone towards major success. On July 31st 2014 Japanese fans had a huge card of Rookie of the year bouts, including this Flyweight bout between the unbeaten, heavy handed and talented Naoki Mochizuki and Yuki Honna, who was returning to the ring after almost 4 years of inactivity. What we ended up seeing was just a glimpse of the talent Mochizuki seems to posses and the starting ground for him to develop from a "rookie" to a prospect or even a national title contender.
