February 4th 2016-City Hall Ground, Chonburi, Thailand Knockout CP Freshmart (11-0, 6) Vs Carlos Buitrago (28-1-1-1, 16) II Earlier today Thai fans got a treat as they had the chance to see a rematch between local star Knockout CP Freshmart [น็อคเอาท์ ซีพีเฟรชมาร์ท] and Nicaraguan visitor Carlos Buitrago, who were having a rematch following a very close contest back in 2014. Unlike their first bout, this one wasn't close and there was no controversy who deserved the win. July 2nd 2015- City Hall Ground, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand Knockout CP Freshmart (10-0, 5) Vs Alexis Diaz (16-0, 10) Earlier today fans in Thailand saw the wonderfully Knockout CP Freshmart battle against unbeaten Venezuelan Alexis Diaz in a bout for the WBA "interim" Minimumweight title. On paper this was a brilliant match up, though in the end the bout failed up to the expectation that we had for it. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) March 5th 2015- City Hall Ground, Chonburi, Thailand Knockout CP Freshmart (9-0, 5) Vs Muhammad Rachman (65-11-5, 35) Thailand's unbeaten Knockout CP Freshmart won the WBA interim title in late 2014. In his first defense he took on Indonesian veteran Muhammad Rachman, a 2-time world champion who was clearly coming to the end of his career. With a 19 year ago gap between the fighters it didn't take a genius to guess who the favourite was going into the contest. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) Although we aren't fans of the WBA's ability to churn out titles for the sake of it we do need to accept that some of those interim title fights do deliver some great match ups and very interesting fights. One such case was when Thailand's Knockout CP Freshmart took on Nicaraguan Carlos Buitrago in a battle for the WBA interim Minimumweight title. Both men came in to the bout with unbeaten records and both knew that a win would see them claiming their first major belt. Both also knew that they weren't going to get the win with out putting up a great fight and both had to give their all in what turned out to be an excellent and highly competitive contest. We won't ruin the bout though we do suggest that if you've not seen it you give it a watch and share your views in the comments. (Video courtesy of the brilliant ทีเคโอ มวยโลก) Less than 5 months after Knockout CP Freshmart struggled with Indian Amit Panghal he would take on another Indian southpaw, Sandeep. This time around Knockout was facing a less well schooled Indian and instead of struggling he lived up to his name and scored a 5th round Knockout courtesy of a sustained body attack. One thing that is clear from this fight is that Knockout had learned from his previous bouts with southpaws, including Panghal and Filipino Jonathan Refugio, both of which went the distance. That's not to say Sandeep is on the same level as the others but the improvement from the Thai was obvious. Whilst this was Knockout's 7th straight win it was also the 4th straight loss for Sandeep who had been stopped by future world title challenger Samartlek Kokietgym and former world champion Oleydong Sithsamerchai, who had also taken a decision over Sandeep in the Indian's only bout to reach the final bell. We've not seen Thailand's fast rising Knockout CP Freshmart struggle much in his career so far, though it's fair to say that unheralded Indian Amit Panghal gave him an unexpectedly tough test when the two men fought this past January. One of the reasons, we suspect, for Knockout's struggles was that Panghal was big for a Minimumweight, he was also defensively clever and, probably most tellingly, he was a southpaw. Being a defensively sound Southpaw made Panghal a tough ask for many young fighters and Knockout was no exception. Despite the win for the Thai we'll admit the fight has left us wanting to see more of Panghal who looks like he has real potential even if he is unlikely to become "India's first ever world champion". There is enough from him here to suggest that he could, with the right team behind him, become a contender though of course we doubt anyone will really put money behind him, sadly. (Note, fight footage is unfortunately incomplete though there is enough here to make it clear that Knockout didn't have things all his own way) When we talk about rising Thai's there is none that have had quite as much attention as the wonderfully named Knockout CP Freshmart. It's fair to say that when he first turned professional he got a lot of attention for two reasons. Firstly he won the WBC Youth Minimumweight title on his debut and not many fighters win titles on debut, or feature in 10 rounders on debut. Secondly his name, there has never been a boxer with a better name for the sport than "Knockout". What we have here is Knockout's 6th professional bout and his 5th title defence. This bout bout saw Knockout taking on Filipino southpaw Jonathan Refugio. Refugio, is a young Filipino with real ambition, and although he had lost 3 of his previous 5 fights they had included bouts with Merlito Sabillo and Wanheng Menayothin and were nothing to be ashamed by. In this bout Refugio managed to take a few rounds from the Thai though was a clear loser who had to pull himself off the canvas on round 2. If you've not seen Knockout before this bout does show an inexperienced fighter facing his first skilled southpaw and shouldn't be viewed as Knockout as his best, instead it's the Thai getting 10 rounds against a southpaw, something that is likely to help him in the future. |
