June 23rd 1983-Miyagi Sports Center, Sendai, Miyagi, Japan Jiro Watanabe (18-1, 13) vs Roberto Ramirez (35-8-1, 20) Not many fighters forced Jiro Watanabe [渡辺二郎] to go 15 rounds but in 1983 that's exactly what the gutsy Roberto Ramirez did, when Ramirez challenged the then WBA Super Flyweight champion.

July 29th 1982-Prefectural Gymnasium, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Jiro Watanabe (15-1, 10) vs Gustavo Ballas (57-1-1, 21) In 1982 Jiro Watanabe [渡辺二郎] claimed his first world title. In his first defense of that title Watanabe went up against former champion Gustavo Ballas. March 15th 1984-Osaka-Jo Hall, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Jiro Watanabe (20-1, 13) vs Celso Chavez (16-0-1, 14) In his 6th defense of the WBA Super Flyweight title Jiro Watanabe [渡辺二郎] took on unbeaten puncher Celso Chavez from Panama. Coming in to this Chavez was unbeaten and had won 16 successive bouts following a draw on his debut. October 6th 1983-Prefectural Gymnasium, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Jiro Watanabe (19-1, 13) vs Soon-Chun Kwon (21-2-1, 14) In 1983 the then WBA Super Flyweight champion Jiro Watanabe [渡辺二郎] took on Korean Soon-Chun Kwon [권순천] in what was Watanabe's 5th defense of the title. Kwon would later make a name for himself as a key Flyweight of the 1980's. December 13th 1985-Municipal Stadium, Daegu, South Korea Jiro Watanabe (25-1, 16) vs Suk-Hwan Yun (4-1, 2) During a 28 fight career Japan's Jiro Watanabe [渡辺二郎] twice fought away from home, with both bouts taking place in Korea. The second of those bouts saw him take on Suk Hwan Yun [윤석환 ] September 17th 1985-Osaka-Jo Hall, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Jiro Watanabe (24-1, 15) vs Kazuo Katsuma (17-8-1, 13) In September 1985 Japanese fight fans saw Jiro Watanabe [渡辺二郎] battle against fellow Japanese fighter Kazuo Katsuma [勝間和雄], in what was Watanabe's third defense of the WBC Super Flyweight title. March 30th 1986-Sports Centre, Itami, Hyogo, Japan Jiro Watanabe (26-1, 17) Vs Gilberto Roman (40-3, 32) In 1986 Japanese fans saw Jiro Watanabe [渡辺二郎] fight for the final time as he took on Mexican great Gilberto Roman. Sadly since his boxing career ended Watanbe has been in and out of trouble with the law on numerous occasions. |
