December 27th 1981-Munhwa Gymnasium, Seoul, South Korea In Chul Baek (14-0, 14) vs Sang Ho Lee (2-2-2, 2) In late 1981 Korean fight fans saw future world champion In Chul Baek [백인철] take on countryman Sang Ho Lee [이상호] in a bout for the OPBF Light Middleweight title. March 30th 1990-Palais des Sports de Gerland, Lyon, Rhône, France In Chul Baek (47-2, 43) Vs Christophe Tiozzo (25-0, 17) In May 1989 In Chul Baek claimed the WBA Super Middleweight title, with an 11th round victory over Fulgencio Obelmejias. He quickly ran up two defences before traveling to France to take on the then unbeaten Christophe Tiozzo. (Video courtesy of rayrobinson333) 28th May 1989-Hongkuk Gymnasium, Yeosu, South Korea In Chul Baek (44-2, 30) v Fulgencio Obelmejias (49-4, 39) In 1988 fans saw Korean puncher In Chul Baek come up short against legendary puncher Julian Jackson in a title bout at Light Middleweight. Just 18 months after that bout Baek would face Venezuelan puncher Fulgencio Obelmejias, who was defending the WBA Super Middleweight title that he had won a year earlier stopping Baek countryman Chong-Pal Park. (Video thanks to rayrobinson333) November 21st 1987-Las Vegas Hilton, Outdoor Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA In Chul Baek (41-1, 36) Vs Julian Jackson (31-1, 29) There has, and always will be, something exciting about watching punchers face off in what is, on paper, a shoot out. One such bout saw Korean fighter In Chul Baek battle the tremendous Julian Jackson and it was clear that this one was never going to go the distance. The two men, meeting for the WBA 154lb title, had just 6 decision wins between them, from an amazing 72 combined wins. Amazingly Baek went up 14lbs soon after this bout and ended up winning a Super Middleweight title whilst Jackson would later go on to become a 2-time Middleweight champion. For much of the 1980 Chong Pal Park had been dominating the OPBF title scene at Middleweight before stepping up to Super Middleweight division and winning both the IBF and WBA world titles. Park's compatriot, In Chul Baek, had been doing something similar on the OPBF scene, albeit at Light Middleweight, before he too moved up to challenge the world at a higher weight. In 1988 the two men collided in an enthralling non-title bout that may not have been all action but saw heavy leather landed by both men before one, eventually, stopped the other in what ended up being a real "hard man" fight. |
